The gathering at the Frymire cross for Easter Sunrise service did not get to see the sun rise because of the cloud cover but that didn't dampen their spirits. Pastor Tanis led the assembled in song and worship. Afterwards all enjoyed good food and fellowship.

At the Knights Ferry School's Public Schools Night the students that won the essay contest, sponsored by the Summit Lodge #112, Free and Accepted Masons, Knights Ferry, were awarded their prizes. The theme was "Together We Make a Difference in our Public Education." Sixth Grade first place went to Meghan Caron and she received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. Second place went to Moriah Loomis and Third place went to Elise Seeds. They each received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. The Easter Sunrise Service wooden cross on Frymire Hill that had been blown over in a storm has been resurrected by the special effort of master craftsperson Bob Muller. Originally built for Easter by the Frymire's son-in-law Bob Paulat, time and weather rotted the wood so Bob Muller made a sturdy metal sleeve strong enough to survive many storms. Dave Rorabaugh effortlessly maneuvered his backhoe to put the cross into the new hole, dug by Verle Beckerdite. Congratulations to Nathan Van Ryn and the Academic Decathlon Team at Oakdale High School, they finished 8th in the State of California competition! The OHS district housed the team at the Hyatt in Sacramento while they competed. The team's goal was to finish in the top 10, something they had done only once before, and they did! Nathan brought home a personal medal, bronze, in Social Science. Yea Team!

Here are some of the many things that are happening in the Ferry this March: On the 3rd is Community Club dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the clubhouse where the final plans for the March 19th Spaghetti dinner will be finalized. On Sunday, March 6th is Breakfast Sunday at the I.O.O.F. Hall on Main Street from 8-12. Sunday was a beautiful day for a ride around Knights Ferry. The hills were green with puffy white almond trees blooming. The Coast Range was coated with snow. Lisa Dolling's pond had her returning Canadian Geese swimming with the mud hens. Daffodils and flowering quince were blooming. The town's violets were a carpet of purple. Those violets came to the Ferry through the open water system many years ago, the seeds spreading through the yards. A nice way to end the ride was at the ice cream parlor!

At the meeting of the Knights Ferry History and Museum Associates, it was decided to have the last side of Miller's Hall replaced. That should end the bat problem! The Museum will have a display for the Civil War reenactment March 19th and 20th.

For the third time in a month the power was out for a long time. This time it went out at about 6:00 p.m., dinner time! Your reporter had almost finished cooking so on went the lids and finished with residual heat. Dinner was by a propane lantern. Some Ferrians went out to dinner, some ate cold sandwiches and some were already through eating. Most just went to bed.

At the meeting of the History and Museum Associates the upcoming Peddler's Faire was discussed. It will be on May 1st because Easter is the last Sunday in April. Notices went out to vendors, $55 for a booth. Call 881-3217 if interested. Also discussed was the Civil War Reenactment scheduled for March 19 and 20. Under new business a leak has been discovered in the roof and a wooden step behind Miller's Hall has split. The Voortmans plan on opening the Knights Ferry Creamery and Sweet Shop in February. The Dollings have an interesting story. Fred was going out his gate when he spotted something lying in the road. Upon closer inspection he found a dead eagle! He called Lisa at the Army Corp and she sent a Fish and Game person. Looking the bird over, he found burn marks; the eagle had flown into the power lines. They turned the bird over to Fish and Wildlife and they will see that Indian tribes will receive the feathers, as Indians are the only people allowed to have eagle feathers. The Knights Ferry School Kindergarteners, First Graders, Second Graders, Fifth Graders, Sixth Graders and the Band all went to Modesto's Gallo Center for the Arts to see the Opus Hand Bell Choir. Degan Sweet liked that the bells were like piano notes. Jackson Ault thought the band was cool and it amazed him. Grace Harden liked when they banged the bells. Xavier Olvera liked when four players formed a team and rang the bells. Gracie Anderson liked the sing along. They all had a great time.

Scott Naccarato and Tristan were going to Alex and Jean's home late Saturday night when they came upon a large mountain lion on Cemetery Road. He sat there for a while then jumped the fence to the Martinelli pasture. Scott said it was very big! Be on the watch!

The noontime Halloween parade through the Ferry was exceptional. The weather was good, the costumes were great and the candy delicious! Winners of the pumpkin decorating contest at the school were: Third place, a clown, by Sergio Garcia, Brandi Cardey, Gracie Anderson, Breanna Banks and Trenton Foster. Second place went to Ray Patton, Austin Santillo, Maddy Watson, Elijah Elting, and Lupita Pineda. First place for a Smokey Bear went to Rilyn Cassaretto, Carter Sturtevant, Carson Sundberg and Mitzy Collantes. The winner of the candy corn count was Aubrey Mendonca. All winners received treats.
