In two years, there will not be enough funding to pay for fire protection in Knights Ferry and Valley Home. This is a major concern for the Citizens Unite meeting attendees as they are looking into possible solutions such as creating another volunteer fire department and finding more funding to keep our fire departments open. This is a very important issue to be passionate about early in the game as these kinds of changes do not happen overnight. We would hate to be without a fire department in two years! Come to the meetings to get involved. Mark your calendar ...

Knights Ferry School had a very busy week! On Thursday, they hosted Roberts Ferry for volleyball and flag football games and on Friday, the entire school put their running shoes on for the annual jogathon fundraiser! The poor air quality nearly cancelled both the game day and jogathon but thankfully the winds were in Knights Ferry School's favor! The jogathon was a morning full of music and Bobcat spirit. Awards were given for raising the most pledge money: First place, Taylor Witzke and Aubrey Mendonca, Second place, Colin Gibson, Third place, Demi Moore. Demi also won the drawing for ...

The time has come for our town to say good-bye to Barbara and Lynn Burroughs as they move to Texas to be near Rhett and his family. They have lived in Knights Ferry for more than 30 years. Barbara has substitute taught at the school for years including in my class and both of my children. Kim McCarthy had the kids make signs and brought cookies to say good-bye and thank you for all the years of substitute teaching! For the rest of us, there will be a Farewell party for the Burroughs at the Community Club on Sunday, October ...

The Knights Ferry Jr. High students hosted a very successful concert fundraiser on Saturday. The students would like to extend a very special thank you to Mrs. Kim McCarthy, Will Taylor, Chris Farris, The Bonemen, Randy Mandy band, and La Morenita in Modesto for all the help planning their fundraiser. The kids sold popcorn and baked goodies, served food, hosted a silent auction, and put on a cake walk all to get one step closer to earning enough money to go to Washington, D.C. in June 2018.

Finally! Following last year's temporary closure of the Knights Ferry post office, the post office was officially granted an annual contract rather than a month to month temporary contract. Postmistress Dolly Haskell made countless phone calls, completed numerous paper packets, performed scores of negotiations, and fulfilled many modern improvements required to keep our post office open.

The community yard sale was the hottest sale in town! The blistering heat didn't scare families from bringing their goods downtown although it did chase many of us away before two!

The first Sunday in town is fast approaching! Breakfast Sunday at the Odd Fellows hall is a monthly tradition for many families. I love seeing the old, the new, the out-of-towners, and the locals enjoying the each other's company across the tables every month. This is a great Sunday to eat breakfast because the community yard sale is on the tennis courts, there will be flu shots available on site, and the Wandering Barista will be parked on Main Street for the morning. Our town is always buzzing with activities for the whole family and that's one thing ...

At the Oakdale Rural Fire Protection Board meeting held in town, the board voted to man the Knights Ferry station full time for the duration of the 2017 fire season. The Fire Chief-recommended decision is positive for our town but it wasn't an easy decision for the board. For quite some time, the Knights Ferry and Valley Home's fire departments have been manned only part time. The change will temporarily close the Valley Home station in order to keep the Knights Ferry station open full time. Dolly Haskell said, "It is important for Valley Home and Knights Ferry ...

Many residents heard shots fired around 11:30 p.m. Sunday before last but very little information was released until late morning the next day. An officer involved shooting in the rafters parking lot had the road coming into Knights Ferry from the highway closed for several hours. The area was full of Sheriff vehicles and investigators gathering evidence for most of the morning.

The Community Club meetings are home to one of my favorite small-town customs, potlucks. Everyone brings a dish to share, some bought and some homemade. This monthly meeting is my favorite meeting in town because it includes some of Knights Ferry's long-established residents who make Jell-O dishes and other homemade dishes. This month's meeting highlighted various activities over the next few months including possible garage sale, flu shots, Jazz Up the Cemetery day, and Love Knights Ferry day. These things are not all organized by the Community Club but it's a group effort! Dolly Haskell is exploring ...

It has been a pleasure to write about the Ferry, covering births, deaths, weddings, birthdays, school activities, MAC meetings, rattlesnakes, mountain lion sightings, Pumpkin Roll and fires. A big controversial coverage was in 1999 when Sierra Conservation Center proposed 9-mile pipeline from the prison to the Stanislaus River just above Knights Ferry. The pipe would carry treated sewage water from the prison. The river intake for Knights Ferry water was just downstream from where they wanted to dump their effluent. Knights Ferry was up in arms and attended many meetings. The prison found another place to dump their water.

With the fire danger so high here are some California Division of Forestry uses of equipment rules: While operating mobile gas powered tools a person must have a 46-inch round point shovel and an appropriate fire extinguisher within 25 feet of them at all times. Any equipment with an internal combustible engine must have a spark arrestor. The fire July 10 on Horseshoe Road was the result of a piece of equipment not having a spark arrestor. A person can be charged and can be held responsible for damage and fire suppression costs if the fire spreads. Since the East ...

This hot weather can stop! The fires have been horrible. Matt and Rossi Glover had property burned, about 90 acres, that was started by dragging chain on a vehicle. The big fire plume in Butte County can be seen from Jeff and Lisa Shearer's ranch in Loma Rica. Numerous small fires in this area have been quickly put out before they get big. Be careful!
