There is a missing African Gray parrot flying around in this area. A couple from the Bay Area were camping at the Horseshoe Recreation area on Orange Blossom Road and the parrot escaped. They stayed a few days to try and find it but no luck. It is 12 inches tall, gray with a red tail. The parrot talks and imitates kitchen appliances. His name is Bird. Alisen Payette and her sons Huxley (7) and Roland (4) were visiting the Oakdale area family and friends. Huxley carried on a family tradition by attending Camp Jack Hazard where his mother spent many a happy summer. With camping, waterslides, visits to Columbia and Santa Cruz as well as Kim McCarthy's Art Camp, the month went by quickly. They reconnected with family and sharing memories of growing up in her "home town" with her boys made this a special visit to California from Missouri. Five-year-old Tristan McCarthy was float-fishing down the Stanislaus River when he caught a fish, a really big fish. It was a 10-pound Striper! His first catch and was he proud and that is no fish story!

The movie night was well attended, with the smell of popcorn wafting over the group. The movie was "Up" and all enjoyed it, young and old. Dave and Heather Voortman's set-up was perfect, good sight and sound. The weather was perfect for a night outside. They are working on what the next movie will be.

Knights Ferry School held its Graduation last Wednesday out on the front of the school overlooking the town. Megan Willis rang the school bell to begin the program. The school children sang, "You're a Grand Old Flag". Mrs. Holcomb presented the Kindergarten class. Kindergarten graduates were Byron Macon, Jenna O'Neil, James Peterson, Troy Peterson, Maria Pineda, Trexler Porter, Madison Regan, McKenzie Regan, Kyla Ryan and Lilly Sturtevant. Knights Ferry News Week of August 27, 2014

Knights Ferry School got off to an interesting start - two days without school because of the water main break in town. The pipe was by the new bridge and the Community Service District helped dig up the pipe and replace it. County health officials put a boil your tap water before drinking in place for two days. All the town restaurants had to close until the water passed the health department's tests. By Friday all was back to normal.

Knights Ferry School started the new year with 87 students. Things are moving fast. The 6th Graders will be going to Outdoor Education on September 29-Oct. 3rd. Back to School Night will be Thursday, August 28th with each teacher giving a 25 minute presentation in their classrooms, starting with Kindergarten at 5:30 p.m. then progressing through the grades. The teachers will present their daily routines, rules and information on Common Core. The Knights Ferry School Band will begin September 2nd. When your reporter started writing the Knights Ferry News in August of 1999, it had to be typed (on a typewriter) on 8 by 6 inch newsprint supplied by the Leader and put through the mail slot on Sunday evenings. Now it is all computerized and so much easier!

There is a new sign up on the highway, a gateway sign for Knights Ferry. It points to the town and tells that there is food and recreation there. Sponsors for the sign so far are: River's Edge, 50's Roadhouse, River Journey, Knights Ferry History and Museum Associates and the Ice Cream and Sweets Shop. It looks really nice.

Kaeli Sweet flew to Virginia Beach, Virginia, to visit her Uncle Adam and Aunt Tiffany. Hurricane Arthur, the first named storm of the season, went up the Atlantic seaboard also. We have to wait until Kaeli is home to find out how that experience was.

Stanislaus of Public Works has CHANGED THE DATES of the slurry seal on the town's streets. New dates are July 7-8-9. The streets are to be sealed in the order as before, Monday-Dent past Vantine and Vantine and Main Street. Tuesday-Lynde, Shurl, Dean and the rest of Dent, Wednesday-Ellen and by the Plaza to Cemetery road. No cars or pedestrians are to be on the sealing job for two hours afterwards. Plan your day accordingly.
