This Thursday, June 3 is the Community Club meeting at the clubhouse at 6:30 p.m. It is a dinner meeting. Speakers for the night are from the Animal Shelter. If you have old towels, dog dishes, etc. to donate, please bring them to the meeting.
Knights Ferrians were shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Gregg Haskell. He was killed in a motorcycle accident on Orange Blossom Road on the 18th. Gregg lived on Main Street for over 20 years, but was a summer child, coming to the Ferry in the summer to visit his relatives ever since he was a child. Gregg and Anna were married in the Community Church and made their home on Main Street. Their children, Owen and James went to Knights Ferry School for a few years before being home schooled. Rattlesnake alert: Michel and Gordon Griesner have killed two young snakes. One was out back in the rose garden and Michel dispatched it and the other was by their front walk and Gordon dispatched that one. Kathy Shuper caught one in a glue trap she had set out for mice in the washroom and it was alive. Knights Ferry lost another long time resident, Jim Porter. His wife, Pat and 7 children, including Mary-Ann Largent of Knights Ferry, 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, survive him. Services were held last Saturday.
There was standing room only at the Oakdale Memorial Chapel last Thursday for the memorial for Patti Ulrich. Burial was at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Knights Ferry. Many co-workers from Hershey's and numerous family members and friends then enjoyed the reception at the River's Edge. She will be missed by Knights Ferry, her home for many years.
Knights Ferry was shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of Patti Ulrich, mother of Jason Ulrich, sister of Kathy Mangante and Eric Ulrich. Her services are Thursday, April 15th at 10 a.m. at Oakdale Memorial Chapel, gravesite at Oak Grove Cemetery, Knights Ferry, with reception to follow at the River's Edge. Patti was a long time Knights Ferry resident.
At the Knights Ferry Community Club meeting, President Linda Morris announced that 4 new tables were purchased to replace 4 old heavy wooden ones. More will be purchased so people who rent the hall will not have to struggle with the old tables. There was a report on the Spaghetti Dinner, very profitable. It took in enough to pay the insurance. Next meeting is May 6th, a dessert meeting with a speaker to be announced.
At the MAC meeting last Thursday Dolly Haskell was sworn in as the newest member of the Municipal Advisory Council. Tim Morris from the Stanislaus County Department of Public Works told of some roadside spraying they are doing but not much happening in the Knights Ferry area. There was some discussion on the roadway by the U.S. Army Corp property. Margarita Ramos from the County Parks Department explained the park system in the county. The cannons boomed and the North and South fought to the delight of the many onlookers seated on the hillside in the lovely spring weather. The camps of the Union and Confederates were separated by the river and were full of activity during the two days of encampment. The town was full of re-enactors and the public both days. The Community Club's spaghetti dinner was well attended with good food and great raffle prizes. There is a missing African Gray parrot flying around in this area. A couple from the Bay Area were camping at the Horseshoe Recreation area on Orange Blossom Road and the parrot escaped. They stayed a few days to try and find it but no luck. It is 12 inches tall, gray with a red tail. The parrot talks and imitates kitchen appliances. His name is Bird. Welcome to the world Rose Catherine Murray, born July 8th to Troy and Natalie. Proud Knights Ferry grandparents are Cathy and Joe Murray. Rose joins big sister Ella at home.
Alisen Payette and her sons Huxley (7) and Roland (4) were visiting the Oakdale area family and friends. Huxley carried on a family tradition by attending Camp Jack Hazard where his mother spent many a happy summer. With camping, waterslides, visits to Columbia and Santa Cruz as well as Kim McCarthy's Art Camp, the month went by quickly. They reconnected with family and sharing memories of growing up in her "home town" with her boys made this a special visit to California from Missouri. Five-year-old Tristan McCarthy was float-fishing down the Stanislaus River when he caught a fish, a really big fish. It was a 10-pound Striper! His first catch and was he proud and that is no fish story!

The movie night was well attended, with the smell of popcorn wafting over the group. The movie was "Up" and all enjoyed it, young and old. Dave and Heather Voortman's set-up was perfect, good sight and sound. The weather was perfect for a night outside. They are working on what the next movie will be.

Knights Ferry School held its Graduation last Wednesday out on the front of the school overlooking the town. Megan Willis rang the school bell to begin the program. The school children sang, "You're a Grand Old Flag". Mrs. Holcomb presented the Kindergarten class. Kindergarten graduates were Byron Macon, Jenna O'Neil, James Peterson, Troy Peterson, Maria Pineda, Trexler Porter, Madison Regan, McKenzie Regan, Kyla Ryan and Lilly Sturtevant. Condolences go out to Fred Dolling and his family on the death of his mother, Della Dolling. Della was a Knights Ferry resident for over 60 years.
