The 51st annual Pumpkin Roll was sunny after a foggy start. It was fun to see people that used to live in the Ferry bring their children to experience rolling a pumpkin down the street. Winners in each category received a trophy. In the Boys 0-5 years the winner was Ryan Mayer and the Girls 0-5 winner was Rita Taylor with a roll 1 foot, 1 inch from the line. This Friday, October 31st, will be the annual parade of Knights Ferry children going trick-or-treating on Main Street. It will start at 12:15 with the children coming down to Main Street in their costumes. Many folks gather to hand out candy and see the costumes. It is a fun time!
Lisa and Fred Dolling have returned from Las Vegas where they visited with Fred's son, Justin and his wife Sarah and the grandchildren. They had a good time except for the return trip - eight-hour delay at the airport!
Sunday night thieves broke in to the outside post office boxes and stole some mail before they were chased off. Be on the lookout.

Knights Ferry Community Club will meet tomorrow, Thursday, October 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in the clubhouse. It is a dessert meeting. Speakers will be from Oakdale Rural Fire Department and Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department. Please plan to attend.
At the meeting of the Knights Ferry History and Museum Associates the gutter situation was discussed. New gutters will be installed in October by Byers Leaf Guard Gutters, ending the clogging and cleaning mess. Also discussed was the availability of the little room by the Ice Cream Parlor. The Voortmans will submit a plan to rent the space as an information center for Knights Ferry.

Your reporter went out to the backyard to see what the cat was looking at in the iris clump. As I got closer I heard the rattle then saw the rattlesnake. I shooed the cat away, got the dogs in the house, yelled SNAKE-SNAKE to Lee and grabbed a shovel, all in about 10 seconds! I jumped up in the flowerbed and pinned the snake between the iris rhizomes and the railroad tie. Lee arrived as I severed the snake into three parts! It had three buttons. The Odd Fellows are going to have a Cribbage tournament on September 20th at their hall on Main Street. There is a $25 entry fee. Food and drinks will be available. Watch this column for more information.
Knights Ferry School got off to an interesting start - two days without school because of the water main break in town. The pipe was by the new bridge and the Community Service District helped dig up the pipe and replace it. County health officials put a boil your tap water before drinking in place for two days. All the town restaurants had to close until the water passed the health department's tests. By Friday all was back to normal.
Knights Ferry School started the new year with 87 students. Things are moving fast. The 6th Graders will be going to Outdoor Education on September 29-Oct. 3rd. Back to School Night will be Thursday, August 28th with each teacher giving a 25 minute presentation in their classrooms, starting with Kindergarten at 5:30 p.m. then progressing through the grades. The teachers will present their daily routines, rules and information on Common Core. The Knights Ferry School Band will begin September 2nd. At the Knights Ferry Community Club meeting a note from former member Maize Brown was read thanking the club for the sendoff cake and card and she missed all – but not enough to come back! The Car Show was discussed with a tentative date of April 4th of next year.
The Knights Ferry School Board meeting was done in record time! The action items that passed were the Audit Report, School Accountability Report Card, Confidential Employee Salary Schedule and the Classified Employee Salary Schedule. Under reports and announcements the March Auction and Dinner is the 28th of March, the staff is working on the Website and the regular February meeting will be February 12, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. with Stanislaus County Superintendent of Schools Tom Changnon in attendance. Knights Ferry Garden Club has picked the winners of the Smokey Bear contest. The winners all received prizes and their posters will now go on to be judged at the State level. First Grade Winners are: First-Holly Conde, Second-Charlee Birdsong, and Third-Maddie Dickens. Second Grade winners are; First-David Kouassi, Second-Kyla Ryan, and Third-Lily Sturtevant. Third Grade winners are: First-Madison Watson, Second-Gracie Anderson, and Third-Austin Sherley. Fourth Grade winners are: First-Grace Hardin, Second-Deagan Sweet, and Third-River McCarthy. There were a lot of people in attendance at the Oakdale Rural Fire Board meeting. The board cleared up the rumor that the Knights Ferry station was being sold, it is not. The survey was commissioned because the LaDonne family said the station was over on their property. No sales were planned in the future. The historical structures in the Ferry were discussed, as they are wooden structures. The Fire Board said all such buildings should be alarmed and monitored for quick response. There was a very large turnout for the Feast put on by the Junior High students of Knights Ferry School. The tables were decorated with fall leaf placemats and turkeys and fall trees made of paper bags. Kaeli Sweet and Rilyn Cassaretto liked decorating the tables. Knights Ferry Community Club Christmas dinner is Thursday, Dec. 4th at 6:00 p.m. at the clubhouse. The Oakdale High School Choir will perform again this year. Attendees are asked to bring: A-M- salads and sides and N-Z desserts and sides. The club will furnish ham, turkey, potatoes and gravy. This is always a great way to start the Christmas season!
