Knights Ferry News for November 4, 2009

The Main Street in Knights Ferry was lined with parents, friends, grandparents, family and strangers last Friday for the annual costume parade of the KF school children. Younger siblings joined in, as did young town folk. There were some great costumes, including a box of popcorn and a person on an outhouse! Candy was handed out and the children trooped back up the hill to find out the winners of the pumpkin-decorating contest. First place went to the pumpkin with vegetables for features, made by Leah Armario, Megan Wolf, Madeline Freitas and Maribel Limon. Second place went to the green ...

At the Knights Ferry Community Club meeting, Sheriff Adam Christianson was the speaker. He gave an update on the budget; 10 million dollars were cut from the budget. They have 600 employees in the department and instead of cutting personnel, the department cut costs. The Sheriff helicopter is parked, too costly to run. Adam himself took a pay reduction. Sheriff Christianson discussed the early release of prisoners, not a great thing for the communities. Also on the agenda was the awarding of a scholarship to an Oakdale High School student, and it was decided to raise the donation to $250 ...

It's rattlesnake number 12 for the Noe family. It was by the dog pen at night and had 12 rattles and a button. Rattlesnakes add a rattle every time they shed their skin, young snakes might shed 4 times a year, less as they age. Randy Noe had to weed whack the yard for granddaughter Aubrey Mendonca's third birthday party so there would be no hiding places for snakes. Aubrey wanted a swim party for family and friends and Bev didn't want to have children running around with a possibility of snakes in the grass.

Knights Ferry News for August 5, 2009

The Saturday morning fire in the 15000 block of Orange Blossom Road sent a big black plume of smoke into the air. The Ali family warehouse was completely destroyed. They conducted their wholesale floral business from that building. The first on the scene was Dave Rorabaugh with his backhoe, (he lives behind there on Horseshoe Road), to make a fire break. Many fire engines responded to the blaze.

Knights Ferry News for July 29, 2009

The mountain lion was sighted again, this time Bryce Hobbs, son of Bridgette and Dusty, was walking the dogs on the Rushing Rapids Trail near dusk (south side of the river) when he heard some sound like yelping and the lion stepped onto the trail. Bryce held the dogs and then the lion went into the brush. The Fish and Game were going to look into this, as maybe the sound was young lions or maybe the lion's dinner! Bryce was really scared!

The weather was beautiful for a fight - a reenactment of a Civil War battle that is - on Saturday and Sunday. There were many tents at the Army Corp Park and many soldiers of the Blue and Gray that battled it out on the hills. The spaghetti dinner was good and many enjoyed winning the great raffle prizes. The town was quite busy!

Knights Ferry News-3-4-15

Breakfast Sunday dawned bright and clear with the daffodils and redbud trees blooming and the almond trees that were past their prime greening up and those just coming into bloom were puffs of pink. The sandhill cranes were heading north from their wintering spots, whirling in their large groups and making a funny call. The sporadic rain that we got helped the grass to grow (also the weeds).

A great big "Thank You!" from the Boyers to the Knights Ferry lawn ferries. Jim came home from the hospital and Diane and Jim were surprised to find their lawn had been mowed and things weed-eated and trimmed. Seems Martha Harding and helpers from the 50's Roadhouse went to work on the Boyer yard since Jim could not do it. It is nice to have such good friends!

Someone removed part of our fence between properties and compromised our security system. They mowed the berries and cut some branches off our shrubs. Yesterday some people were on the property next door and it looked like they were going to fence it. If you remove a fence shouldn't you contact the other property owner?

The skunks are coming out looking for mates and some are ending up as road kill. The recipe for de-skunking your dog is one quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/3-cup baking soda and 1 tablespoon of liquid soap. With a cloth, wash it into the fur and leave for a few minutes then wash off. This needs to be done within four hours of skunking. I keep the ingredients on hand always!
