Knights Ferry News Week of April 9, 2014

Tonight, Thursday, April 9th is Public School Night celebration at KFS beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the classrooms open. At 6:00 p.m. the program will begin in the multi-purpose room with the essay contest winners announced by the sponsoring Masonic Lodge Oak Summit #112, Free and Accepted Masons, Knights Ferry. Classrooms will be opened again at 6:30.

Knights Ferry News April 2, 2014

Don and Gayle Diltz have returned from a trip to Dana Point where they went whale watching. There were Grey Whales and lots of dolphins. Then they went to Capistrano and got in on a St. Patrick's Day celebration. They spent 4 days in that area and then went to Palm Springs where they enjoyed the 82-degree weather. In Indio Don and Gayle went to a date farm where they learned all about how they pollinate each tree by hand and then they got to taste a variety of dates.

Congratulations go out to the Knights Ferry School Student of the Month: Kindergarten- Joshua Maceira, 1st and 2nd grades- Jenna O'Neil and Levi Dickens, 3rd and 4th grades- Ben Cassinetto and Dylan Anderson, 5th and 6th grades- Marcada Baker and Braden Sousa, 7th and 8th grades- Alyssa Sisco and Aleesha Harden. They were honored at an assembly. A new award at KFS is for NED-Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best. Those honored were Johnny Wheat, Troy Peterson, Dylan Anderson, Destiny Machado, and Katherine Ramirez. Way to go students!

There have been sightings of a Golden Eagle in the Horseshoe/Orange Blossom road area. The Golden Eagle has a wingspan of 7 feet. It eats rabbits and rodents where the Bald Eagle eats fish. If you can get a close look at the Golden Eagle it has feathers down to its toes and the Bald Eagle's legs are bare. There are more sightings of the Bald Eagle in this area as it eats fish.

At the MAC meeting last Thursday, Ric Feichter was chosen President and Dolly Haskell is Secretary. During Citizen Forum, the Oakdale Rural Fire Department and Rick from Stanislaus Consolidated talked on the possible merger of the two districts. Oakdale City Fire does not want to merge but will contract for services. If they merge it should have more resources available. Consolidated would own all and that raised a question of our local fire station since the town built it and sold it to Oakdale Rural for $1.00. If anything happened the station was to revert back to the town ...

Your reporter was looking out the kitchen window enjoying the morning cup of coffee when something caught my eye in Jim Rotelli's pasture. Thought it was a yellow dog until it turned sideways. It was a mountain lion! It was just ambling along, looking around. The dogs were inside so I put on my slippers but by the time I got outside it was in the berries and gone. I couldn't believe it, just as plain as day walking so close to our place. Now I watch outside every moment I get, knowing that I will not see ...

Knights Ferry School Board met Thursday at their new time - 5:30 p.m. This early time enables teachers to attend. The Board approved the Audit and the Board Policies. Superintendent Cheryl told of the installation of the public address system over vacation. This was a safety issue. The fiber optics line to the school has been turned on. There will be a mobile computer lab with 25 laptops coming next week so the students can take the tests for Common Core. The Character Assembly was on NED, Never give up-Encourage others-Do your best.

Your reporter went out to the backyard to see what the cat was looking at in the iris clump. As I got closer I heard the rattle then saw the rattlesnake. I shooed the cat away, got the dogs in the house, yelled SNAKE-SNAKE to Lee and grabbed a shovel, all in about 10 seconds! I jumped up in the flowerbed and pinned the snake between the iris rhizomes and the railroad tie. Lee arrived as I severed the snake into three parts! It had three buttons. Knights Ferry News Week of August 27, 2014

Knights Ferry School got off to an interesting start - two days without school because of the water main break in town. The pipe was by the new bridge and the Community Service District helped dig up the pipe and replace it. County health officials put a boil your tap water before drinking in place for two days. All the town restaurants had to close until the water passed the health department's tests. By Friday all was back to normal.

There is a new sign up on the highway, a gateway sign for Knights Ferry. It points to the town and tells that there is food and recreation there. Sponsors for the sign so far are: River's Edge, 50's Roadhouse, River Journey, Knights Ferry History and Museum Associates and the Ice Cream and Sweets Shop. It looks really nice.
