Here are some of the many things that are happening in the Ferry this March: On the 3rd is Community Club dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the clubhouse where the final plans for the March 19th Spaghetti dinner will be finalized. On Sunday, March 6th is Breakfast Sunday at the I.O.O.F. Hall on Main Street from 8-12. Sunday was a beautiful day for a ride around Knights Ferry. The hills were green with puffy white almond trees blooming. The Coast Range was coated with snow. Lisa Dolling's pond had her returning Canadian Geese swimming with the mud hens. Daffodils and flowering quince were blooming. The town's violets were a carpet of purple. Those violets came to the Ferry through the open water system many years ago, the seeds spreading through the yards. A nice way to end the ride was at the ice cream parlor!

At the meeting of the Knights Ferry History and Museum Associates, it was decided to have the last side of Miller's Hall replaced. That should end the bat problem! The Museum will have a display for the Civil War reenactment March 19th and 20th.

For the third time in a month the power was out for a long time. This time it went out at about 6:00 p.m., dinner time! Your reporter had almost finished cooking so on went the lids and finished with residual heat. Dinner was by a propane lantern. Some Ferrians went out to dinner, some ate cold sandwiches and some were already through eating. Most just went to bed.

At the meeting of the History and Museum Associates the upcoming Peddler's Faire was discussed. It will be on May 1st because Easter is the last Sunday in April. Notices went out to vendors, $55 for a booth. Call 881-3217 if interested. Also discussed was the Civil War Reenactment scheduled for March 19 and 20. Under new business a leak has been discovered in the roof and a wooden step behind Miller's Hall has split. The Voortmans plan on opening the Knights Ferry Creamery and Sweet Shop in February. There was a large turnout for the Community Club dinner last Thursday. After the good food was eaten, President Linda Morris discussed the annual Ground Hog Dinner and White Elephant Raffle. This year's date is February 5th at 6 p.m. at the clubhouse. Chef Chris will prepare the main dish and attendees will bring sides, salads or desserts. The Knights Ferry Community Club dinner was well attended. The tables were decorated with red coverings and greens and ornaments. Pastor Tanis said Grace and the Oakdale High School Choir, under the direction of Brian Mills, got to eat first so they could sing to the audience during dinner. There were many delicious dishes as well as ham, turkey and all the fixings. Madison Abbott, former Knights Ferry resident and KFS graduate was one of the soloists. Knights Ferry School held its Jog-a-thon Award assembly last Friday. Students running the highest number of laps per grade (boy and girl) were: Kindergarten- River McCarthy and Xavier Olivera, First Grade- tie Dakota Voortman, Maribel Limon, Second Grade- Marcada Baker and Joshua Munoz, Third Grade- Alex Arias, Fourth Grade- Paris Thompson and Sam Fletcher, Fifth Grade- Julia Nilsson and Ray Patton, Sixth Grade- Sophie Jones and Daniel Lubeck, Junior High- Annette Arias and Duke Bonde. A great big "Thank You!" from the Boyers to the Knights Ferry lawn ferries. Jim came home from the hospital and Diane and Jim were surprised to find their lawn had been mowed and things weed-eated and trimmed. Seems Martha Harding and helpers from the 50's Roadhouse went to work on the Boyer yard since Jim could not do it. It is nice to have such good friends!

Someone removed part of our fence between properties and compromised our security system. They mowed the berries and cut some branches off our shrubs. Yesterday some people were on the property next door and it looked like they were going to fence it. If you remove a fence shouldn't you contact the other property owner?

The skunks are coming out looking for mates and some are ending up as road kill. The recipe for de-skunking your dog is one quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/3-cup baking soda and 1 tablespoon of liquid soap. With a cloth, wash it into the fur and leave for a few minutes then wash off. This needs to be done within four hours of skunking. I keep the ingredients on hand always!

Knights Ferry was saddened to learn of the death of Glenda Maisel last Wednesday. Glenda and Rick ran the General Store for many years. Glenda ran her Back Door Deli and her Taco Soup will be missed! She was memorialized with a candlelight vigil at the Deli. Her husband Rick, parents Glen and Virginia Langum, and sisters Donna and Debbie and brother Gary survive Glenda. Her Memorial Service will be Thursday, January 29th at 10:00 at the Trinity Church in Escalon. Rest in Peace Glenda.

The Knights Ferry School Board meeting was done in record time! The action items that passed were the Audit Report, School Accountability Report Card, Confidential Employee Salary Schedule and the Classified Employee Salary Schedule. Under reports and announcements the March Auction and Dinner is the 28th of March, the staff is working on the Website and the regular February meeting will be February 12, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. with Stanislaus County Superintendent of Schools Tom Changnon in attendance. Knights Ferry Garden Club has picked the winners of the Smokey Bear contest. The winners all received prizes and their posters will now go on to be judged at the State level. First Grade Winners are: First-Holly Conde, Second-Charlee Birdsong, and Third-Maddie Dickens. Second Grade winners are; First-David Kouassi, Second-Kyla Ryan, and Third-Lily Sturtevant.
