Keep Tabs On Groundwater

Dear Editor,March 11-17, 2012 is National Groundwater Awareness Week. Over 90 percent of all public drinking water systems rely on groundwater to supply the population with drinking water. Many residents in the Oakdale area have a private well that supplies their water. Getting an annual water well check up is like checking your furnace or smoke detector batteries seasonally. It's a smart thing to do. As a member of the National Ground Water Association, I encourage well owners to get their wells checked during Groundwater Awareness Week.An annual checkup by a certified or licensed water well contractor ...

Concerned About Coverage

Dear Editor,I would like to clear up the issue of the comment I made on CBS 13 which aired February 29, regarding the photograph of Oakdale native Sergeant Brandon Morgan and his boyfriend.I am interested in becoming a journalist and, when I saw the news van, approached the reporter and her cameraman. The reporter offered to interview me, showed me the photograph and asked me what I thought of it. My immediate reply was that the First Amendment states that we have the right to freedom of speech and expression of our opinions and beliefs. I said that ...

FOR YOUR INFORMATION – Your Oakdale Fire Department

During these tough economic times public safety has been under the spotlight for quite some time and rightfully so. Any agency that's responsible for spending taxpayer dollars should be transparent and have the ability to stand behind the decisions they make when it comes to taxpayer's money. I would like to take a moment to set the record straight as to what exactly your fire department does with reserve firefighters, and the money it has saved the city by operating efficiently while thinking outside the box in the last seven years.

What’s Growin’ On … Busy Season For Stanislaus

Stanislaus County agriculture comes alive in April with almost all perennial crops coming out of winter and spring dormancy. Grapes usually are one of the last to emerge with the green tissue you see bust out and grow with vigor. Soon you will see forage crops being harvested and you can tell by seeing big choppers blowing chopped material into a truck traveling alongside. Most of this will be going to dairy animals for feed. This is the first sign of what will be a long harvest season with our 250 different crops grown in Stanislaus County through the end ...
