Sex Drugs & Baseball

I've been a longtime baseball fan and October baseball has always been one of my pleasures – especially the playoffs leading to the World Series where you can still see some good 'ol daytime baseball with the stands casting those autumn shadows onto the field.

Marg-Ins - Of Mets And Machines

So usually being at work until late night Tuesday is not my favorite thing. Let's just start there. Because if I am at work late Tuesday night it means there was a problem with production and the paper (or papers, depending on when the problem occurred) did not go to press on time.

RICH IN THOUGHT – Furry Work Buds

One of the benefits with my job, besides being the perfect retirement gig that allows me to be my opinionated self in my column, still respond to emergencies and crimes, and generally be part of a great community, is that on Fridays I get to take my two Bernese mountain dogs, Dante and Gino, to work with me for the day.

One Stage At A Time

So it wouldn't seem that writing a once-a-month column would be such a hard thing. Certainly from one month to the next, plenty of 'stuff' happens to generate material for a few hundred words. True enough. Mostly my columns tend to be the 'spur of the moment, what's happening in my world now' type pieces, hopefully something to give the reader a chuckle or two or maybe writing something they can identify with, nodding in agreement.

RICH IN THOUGHT – Flags, Courage, And Defiance

Maybe it's the A's lousy season that has me grumpy or maybe it's the influx of social media I have going to stay on top of things, but I can't remember another time where things were so upside down. Since about June some national stories, and their aftermaths, just have me shaking my head wondering what the heck is going on.

RICH IN THOUGHT – Love Wins And A Pink Unicorn

With the landmark 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday (June 26) allowing same-sex couples to legally marry in all 50 states, we witnessed civil rights history.

Marg-Ins - Plan For The Best

If there were ever a suitable microcosm for life, for me, it would have to be the 24 hours of Relay For Life.

TIME OUT - A Bundle Of Joy Awaits

My wife, Lindsay and I are approaching our two year anniversary on June 29. Over the last two years we have made life plans such as travel, career aspirations, eventually purchasing a new house where we can raise a family; which leads me to my topic: starting a family.

MARG-INS - Trial And Error

Just in case you haven't been paying attention, there have been some changes being implemented in our papers over the past month.

RICH IN THOUGHT -Heck With It, We're All No. 1

Around the newsroom this week, upcoming graduations were a popular topic as some of the reporters prepared to cover the high school commencements. At our last staff meeting I was taken back when I heard of one local high school's selection of four valedictorians and two salutatorians for its graduating class.

End Of An Era

An adventure stretching over eight years … covering literally thousands of miles … hastily eaten hotel breakfasts (sometimes hot and sometimes not) – and memories to last a lifetime.

RICH IN THOUGHT –Voices Of The Season

A recent newsroom conversation about the passing of legendary Giants and A's broadcaster Lon Simmons earlier this month sparked a conversation about baseball on the radio and some of those memorable voices that trademark a baseball game with their ability to speak.

Marg-Ins-Of Bricks And Fellows

So it is that exciting time of year when baseball is in the air, basketball (March Madness, specifically) is just about in the rearview mirror and, for those with teams still in it, the Stanley Cup playoffs loom just around the corner.

RICH IN THOUGHT - DNA Tests And Rose Ceremonies

With so many quality police shows, dramas, premium channel series, and sports to watch on TV, one of my guilty pleasures of television watching these days is a couple of reality TV shows where I just get to disengage my thinking brain and get to become more of a sarcastic, judging, critical SOB than I already am.

Marg-Ins –Acrophobia By The Bay

So I am not sure if acrophobia – the fear of heights – or vertigo – a feeling of sudden onset dizziness – are exactly what I experienced, but both seemed to play a role in my recent overnight trip to San Fran.
