Happy New Year

It's hard to believe it, but when I least expect it I am hit by another 'parenting epiphany.'

Let’s Share A Story …

September already. It just is not possible. School has started, summer (at least on the calendar, if not by the weather) is waning and there's a feeling of rejuvenation in the air.

Family Time

Recently, our family took a much-needed and well-anticipated camping trip into the mountains, to a place above North Fork called Mammoth Pools.

Mars And Venus On Vacation

I'm getting ready to take a mini vacation. I recently had a conversation with my significant other and told him that I wasn't sure what clothes to take on our trip.
He was confused. "What do you mean? It's casual," he said.
Well I know that, but my casual wardrobe is more complicated than his. I pointed out that it's easy for him because his casual wardrobe consists of golf shirts, jeans or khaki pants, and shorts. That's it. All he has to figure out is what color shirt and pants to wear. His shirts ...

Mommy Musings - In A Blink

I have spent the better part of the past four years sharing stories of my children. Jackson, our oldest, has been the topic of many columns. As I've said on numerous occasions, his five years on this planet have been a great learning experience for both of us.
As Jackson continues to grow and thrive, our youngest Madelyn is quickly trying to keep up. Madelyn, our second and last child, is now teaching me a whole new set of lessons.
She is everything her brother is not and a constant reminder that parenting is not a cookie cutter skill ...

Marg-Ins - Life Number Nine

As is the case with many small town papers, much of what we share in our once-a-month columns here on the 'perspective' page is of a personal nature. It's a way for readers to get to know the reporters and myself a little better; what makes us tick, our likes and dislikes.
Many of you responded with emails, personal contacts, phone calls, and even a couple of sympathy cards when I shared the loss of my nearly 18-year-old cat a few months ago. The cat had come with me when I made the cross country relocation from upstate New ...

Jawin’ w/Jagada - Talking About Second Chances …

Okay, here's the scenario. You're on the tail end of a late drive home and you're less than a mile away from the house when the fiery red lights of a fire truck and ambulance catch your eye in front of you on the horizons.
Obviously you pick up speed and you make the second to last right to get to your house and the ambulance tailing the fire truck in seemingly guiding you to your destination.
The fire truck stops directly in front of your home and the ambulance pulls in behind the multiple-ton emergency vehicle ...

Sorry, No Postcards

In Oregon, they say, it rains nearly every day and the residents have webbed feet to prove it. That's an exaggeration. I've just returned from a week's vacation in Oregon and can testify the overcast sky cleared by noon on five days out of seven and the locals do not have skin between their toes like ducks.

The temperatures were in the low 70s and balmy by my reckoning. The kind of summer weather I was used to while growing up in England.

Going To National

By the time you read this I'll have returned from my business trip but as I'm writing ahead of schedule, I haven't left yet. It's kind of like writing about the future!
So, each year, I go to the Romance Writers of America national conference and each year I run around like a chicken with its head cut off because I'm not prepared.
You'd think that with a year to prepare I'd be ready to go but you see, that's not in my personality. I'm the kind of girl who likes ...

Hot Holiday For Revelers

There were plenty of illegal fireworks bursting in the air Saturday night, July 4 - and a few fires as a result, one of which burned 11 acres at Duck Cove at Woodward Reservoir - but while several illegal fireworks were confiscated, no citations were given within the City of Oakdale, said officials.

Tee Time

I am preparing to play my first real golf game. I've been taking private lessons with a pro for a little while and it's time to hit the links. My significant other - who's always itching to play golf - says I'm ready for a round. I'm not sure that I feel ready but I'm going to give it a try anyway. Until now, about the closest I've gotten to playing is driving the cart.

Soothing The Soul

How nice of California to heat up to triple digits just as soon as I returned from a vacation to lush, green, rainy and non-humid upstate New York. What a welcome back.

What Can You Do…?

Slowly but surely Americans seem to be taking to the 'green' movement. Referred to by some as a 'trendy,' I will openly admit this is one 'trend' I am happy to be a part of.

Finally…A New Release

It's felt like forever (10 months between releases is too long in my estimation) but finally, my sixth book will hit the shelves the second week in July and I'm so excited.

DAWN’S COLUMN - Superstitious Minds

As I write this column, it's Friday the 13th and this morning a coworker sent out a mass, funny text message about remaining calm, but then warning about all the things not to do on this date.

Stuff ‘N Nonsense

In July I attended my annual writer conference sponsored by the Romance Writer's Association and this year it was held in balmy Georgia, which was where my first RWA conference was held in 2006. It was fun to return to the peach state a little wiser than my first go-round and with the exciting changes in publishing right now, it was an amazing, vibrant conference.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK – If They Could See Me Now

I admit that when I received the congratulatory notice, it had me fooled. I thought the well-worded email was the lead into a scam informing the recipient they've won an award but would have some sort of out-of-pocket expense to be paid in advance with a product I'd never see. As I read on, I found it was in fact authentic. My screenplay was a "Silver Ace Award" winner at the Las Vegas Film Festival being held July 18-21.

Out Of Bounds - Thumper Tastes Good

RICH IN THOUGHT That’s What Brotherhoods Are For

While it's difficult to find a silver lining with any tragedy, I became aware of a blessing amid the sadness a few weeks ago when I was reunited with cherished individuals who played a significant part in my past law enforcement career during the funeral service of a former patrol partner of mine.
