Community Corner - Introducing The MOPS Group

I joined MOPS, Mothers of Preschoolers, last year as a participant. At the urging of my friend and the fearless leader of the group, Tracy Mota, I decided to devote two mornings a month to myself. So on the first and third Thursday of every month, I go to River Oak Grace Church in Oakdale for fun, fellowship and really great food.

Editor’s Notebook - Just Take A Minute

If there's one thing I've learned over the years in this business, it's that the 'story behind the story' is often the more interesting to tell.

Community Corner - Museum, Rodeo Part Of Area History

Rodeo time in Oakdale is also anniversary time at the Oakdale Cowboy Museum. It was the second week in April 1996, when Chamber of Commerce staff and volunteers invited merchants, and members of our community to celebrate the grand opening of the Museum by hosting a Chamber Rodeo Mixer. After all it was during a planning meeting of the Chamber Board of Directors that the idea to create an institution that would celebrate our unique western history was born. The City of Oakdale agreed to lease 500 square feet of space in the historic Southern Pacific Railroad Building to hold ...

Technological Wonders

There's really no question in my mind that computers are smarter than we are. Well, perhaps I should speak only for myself. My computer is smarter than me. And just when I think I have it figured out, something else changes and the learning curve starts all over again.

Stuff N' Nonsense - Delving Into A Dangerous Place

Recently, I turned in the rough draft of my 18th novel to my publisher. Initially, there's always a sense of exhilaration that I completed this monstrous creative task but after the high fades, I'm swamped by feelings of loss.

The Reluctant Columnist - Here’s To Our Health

Fitness seems to a reoccurring theme in my life lately. Our group of newspapers, Oakdale, Riverbank and Escalon, has decided to introduce a monthly health and fitness section, which means I will be writing health and fitness stories at least once a month. Our office is also participating in a 100 miles in 100 days challenge, so I have been trying to walk or bike at least a mile a day. Add in all of the New Year's resolution talk, and I've had just about all the fitness I can stand.

Editor’s Notebook - Changes For The Better Slated In 2012

As we ease in to the New Year, some changes 'are afoot' for The Oakdale Leader and its companion papers, The Escalon Times and The Riverbank News.

Dawn's Column - Step Away From The Chips

After some discussion and observation, it seems to me that most people make New Year's resolutions that are related to better health. They usually go something like this: join the gym, lose weight, stop smoking, cut back on the beer, and so on.

RICH IN THOUGHT – We Interrupt This Marriage For Baseball Season

Spring is in the air and for me that means one thing. Not flowers blooming, not complaints of sneezing and watery eyes from allergies, not Easter, not even the Oakdale Rodeo.

Still Matters - Make A Wish

Another birthday has gone by and the year is moving along at its normally quick pace. Birthdays have always been a cause for celebration in my life. We are not guaranteed a long life so every year that I reach a new age, I find myself reflecting, feeling very blessed, and thankful that I had a year filled with a lot of laughter and love.

RICH IN THOUGHT – When Did I Get This Old?

It seems to have all of a sudden hit me that I'm in my mid-50s. With that awareness comes the oh-so-common, "Where did all the time go?" (And there's no mid-life crisis here with plans to go out and buy a corvette and cruise with a young blonde bombshell named Bambi).

Editor’s Notebook - Blame It On The Bachelor

Let's just say I have never been that much of a fan of 'reality' TV because in all honesty, it's probably the furthest thing from real life as you can get. Who can be 'natural' when there are lights and cameras tracking your every move?

Marg-Ins - Glory In The Games

Whether you are an ardent sports fan or just a casual observer you really can't go wrong taking a few minutes out of your schedule to sit down and watch the Olympic Games. Chances are, you get one of the many channels that are carrying them, with nearly nonstop action all day, depending on where you turn.

RICH IN THOUGHT - Not Letting Sleeping Dogs Lie

It's bedtime at Villa Paloma and as I make my way upstairs after turning off the lights and ensuring doors are locked, comes the time where I need to make my claim on what's left of the real estate on our California king as the TV flickers the nightly news.

MARG-INS TV, Time And Tidbits

All right, I can tell on myself. This column and the ones our reporters periodically provide for this page are due on the Friday before the next Wednesday's paper. Typically, a 5 p.m. Friday deadline, though I have been known to let people email them to me on a Saturday as long as I know it's coming and can still get it proofread in time for the page to be built. But it has been an extremely busy time for me so I gave myself a break and put the deadline off until – yikes! – Monday. Besides, I ...
