Ryle Smith, a 2005 Oakdale High graduate and professional cowboy, returned to his hometown triumphantly on April 13 and 14 to claim an All-Around Champion title at the 61st Annual Oakdale Saddle Club Rodeo.
Last week I was able to get out fishing, it's been a while since I've been out. My partner became ill the night before leaving me to fish by myself. I had my dog with me but she wasn't much help lying on the bottom of the boat, dead asleep most of the day. At one point I even heard her snoring! She did provide me with a little excitement when she decided to put her two front paws on the edge of the boat and when she tried to run to the edge of the boat ...

It wasn't much of a surprise to area wrestling fans when 2011 Sac-Joaquin Section Masters champion and two-time state medalist Trent Noon announced he would accept a scholarship at Clackamas Community College in Oregon, considered the best JUCO wrestling program in the nation.
The 52nd Annual NHRA O'Reilly Auto Parts Winter Nationals felt some of the wrath of Mother Nature, with the final session of qualifying on Saturday, Feb. 11 being washed out by rain. The rain lightened up overnight, decreasing to a minor drizzle early Sunday morning. This caused a minor delay to the start of Sunday's final eliminations. Once the rain stopped, the overcast with minor bursts of blue sky and sunshine provided for some highly optimal weather conditions, improving the performance of the racecars. Race teams took advantage of these optimal conditions and turned up the wick, giving ...

I almost hate to mention that spring is almost here, but it is! I'm already seeing some early signs. A couple trees in my neighborhood have started to bloom and the water temperatures in our local lakes and delta have slowly been increasing. Another sign to me is having daylight after 5 p.m. Like most changes in seasons, it happens before most people realize. I'm still hoping for a few solid days of rain or even an early spring cold spell, but judging from the past couple of days, who knows what's going to happen? I ...

While I am a pretty good football fan, once my local teams have been eliminated from the quest for the Super Bowl, I'd rather go fishing than watch some other teams spar in the Super Bowl. If you stop and think about it, there are almost always no crowds out on the water on Super Bowl Sunday. You've got the lake or stream pretty much to yourself.
If Oakdale Mixed Martial Arts Club owner/instructor Tom Theofanopoulos had any concerns about the strength of competition, venue or attendance he would see from his own Art of War production company, he certainly addressed them Saturday.
Several years ago in an angler's online forum, I wrote about our artificial baits becoming better than the fisherman. I had recently lost several tournaments to less skilled and experienced anglers who beat me with a bait that wasn't released yet to the public. Lately there's been a new bait that's really making a lot of noise. It's called the Alabama Rig or Umbrella Rig; originally used in salt water fishing to mimic a small school of bait, it's been scaled down to be used in fresh water, and has been the winning bait ...

A lot of people that I've been talking to are concerned about the lack of rain we've had so far this season. Through writing this column, I've learned that there's a definite pattern in the weather from year to year. It seems like every fourth year we have a similar dry spell and then all of sudden, we are hit by a series of big storms that just about make up for all the lack of rain. Four years ago the delta along with other surrounding waterways had to be shut down as they were unsafe ...
