With the end to my summer break rapidly approaching, my fishing time will definitely have to be scaled back. This summer was different than summers past, I did more kokanee fishing than I've ever done before and learned a lot about fishing a completely different species. Kokanee fishing can be extremely easy at times and extremely boring at times. My 10-year-old son seemed to remind me of the latter every time he saw that I was getting our small aluminum boat ready. He pretty much got burned out after about five trips. He continued to go out fishing with ...
Caden Farquer of Oakdale High was the runner-up all around champ at the District 5 rodeo in April, but emerged into his own spotlight in his most recent competition. Farquer came away with the championship, all around honors, at the Silver State International Rodeo in Nevada, which ran from July 2 through 7.
Move over Colton, there's a new sheriff in town. Incoming Oakdale High sophomore Caden Farquer, younger brother to longtime successful youth rodeo star, Colton Farquer, established a reputation all his own on the rodeo scene with an All-Around Cowboy title at the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca, Nevada from July 2 to 7. With competitors from three Canadian provinces and nine U.S. states vying for top honors, Caden erupted to stellar performances in cutting, team roping and tie down roping to snare five buckles, a trophy saddle and the spectacle that is his own brand new trailer.
I just returned from a camping trip and couldn't believe all the fees that I had to pay in order to camp a few days at the lake. There were fees like fishing fees, day use fees, second car fees, launching fees, dog fees, camping fees, and more. As much as I tried to ignore all the fees and just tried to focus on having a good time, it was hard to not feel a little unhappy. I don't know, maybe it's always been that way; this time definitely seemed different. The one fee that seemed to ...
August 12, 1956 was a Sunday and like most days during the summer, I was camped with my parents at Hermit Valley in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. That particular Sunday however, we were joined by my dad's brother, my Uncle Joe Moyer, his wife my Aunt Elinore, and my cousins Darrell, Ron, and Harvey Moyer and our Grandfather Ed "Pop" Moyer. Dad and I were off fishing when our kinfolk arrived, and soon everyone was fishing as well. Logically, we had fresh trout for dinner that night. I had totally forgotten this rather ordinary summer day but was reminded ...
If the Junior Olympics are the kid-sister to the Olympic Games, then the Oakdale water polo girls are coming over for a sleepover.
I was asked the other day about using live bait and what I thought about using live bait? I like most anglers started out using live bait. A worm threaded on a hook underneath a bobber was all I ever used as a kid. As I got older, I started experimenting with the different live baits and still occasionally will use live bait. I was introduced to using artificial baits one day while fishing off the back of my father's boat, that day, I watched in amazement as he was casting a rattle trap to catch Striped Bass. I ...

Keeping it simple often is the key ingredient to an angler's success out on the water. Of all my boxes and boxes of tackle I still find myself going back to my old faithful lures when the latest and greatest stuff just isn't working. Any top pro will tell you that he or she may use a variety of different techniques but owes a lot of their success to one or two techniques or baits. They've mastered that bait and its presentation therefore keeping it simple. Too much time is wasted trying out different lures. A co ...
I was looking through some of my tackle the other day and it was sad to see once popular baits that were no longer being used. Like most hobbies there's always something better that comes out that you just have to have. For a while there I was obsessed with having the latest and greatest until I fished with a guy called Bill. Bill was in his 60's and I heard from a friend that he was a pretty good bass fisherman. I ended up getting to know Bill and eventually was able to go fishing with him ...

I'm not sure the exact reason but this is the time of year when I see the most arrests being made for poaching on the water. Be prepared to give the fullest possible account of the incident including the name, address, age and description of the ...

I can't remember how many times over the past year that I've emphasized being prepared for the unexpected while out fishing. The unexpected happened to me a few years ago while out on the delta. Fishing out of a relative's fairly new boat we were surprised to hear the ever so dreaded "click, click" sound when attempting to start his boat at the end of the day. His batteries had died and we were officially stranded! Being a new boat as well as a new boat operator his only useful device on board was his cell phone ...
Fish attractants have been used in some form or another for many years. In the middle 1980s I can remember there being a big interest in fish attractants as several major tackle manufacturers added fish attractants to their product line. I can remember one specific brand that comes to mind "Bait mate," it was in a liquid form with a consistency that was similar to vegetable oil. One quick spray of this supposedly would create a feeding frenzy. Every major fishing show started to endorse the use of fish attractants and anglers followed accordingly. To add a little confusion manufacturers ...
