Fishing Report

Fish attractants have been used in some form or another for many years. In the middle 1980s I can remember there being a big interest in fish attractants as several major tackle manufacturers added fish attractants to their product line. I can remember one specific brand that comes to mind "Bait mate," it was in a liquid form with a consistency that was similar to vegetable oil. One quick spray of this supposedly would create a feeding frenzy. Every major fishing show started to endorse the use of fish attractants and anglers followed accordingly. To add a little confusion manufacturers ...

Fishing Report

Labor Day weekend is an exciting time for most anglers. Unfortunately nearly 20 percent of all boating accidents in California occur on holidays. Surprisingly 80 percent of all boating fatality victims would have survived if they had been wearing a life jacket. Once an accident occurs, it is often too difficult, and usually too late, to don a life jacket. Imagine trying to put a seatbelt on while in the middle of a crash! Once you're ejected from the boat there's no guarantee that you will be conscious when your body comes to rest in the water. Recently ...

A Race Within A Race For A Hundred Grand

A tropical storm dubbed 'Hurricane Isaac' reached its fingers up the gulf and delivered a downpour, but through much perseverance and utilization of all the modern technology and informational resources, the National Hot Rod Association was able to get nearly all of the scheduled activities for Aug. 29 and Sept. 1 completed.

Almost Three In A Row In Sonoma

Will Power came into the GoPro IZOD Indy Car Grand Prix of Sonoma with a chance to make it three in a row. He had the fastest car during nearly every test and practice session over the weekend. He then qualified on the pole. Power led the first 17 laps until the first cycle of pit stops, at which time his Penske teammate (Ryan Briscoe) took the lead. He then led laps 21-40 before the second set of pit stops, where Briscoe would take over. When Power regained the lead on lap 44, it looked like a third consecutive win ...

With the end to my summer break rapidly approaching, my fishing time will definitely have to be scaled back. This summer was different than summers past, I did more kokanee fishing than I've ever done before and learned a lot about fishing a completely different species. Kokanee fishing can be extremely easy at times and extremely boring at times. My 10-year-old son seemed to remind me of the latter every time he saw that I was getting our small aluminum boat ready. He pretty much got burned out after about five trips. He continued to go out fishing with ...

Farquer Relishes Role As An International (Trailer) Harvester

Move over Colton, there's a new sheriff in town. Incoming Oakdale High sophomore Caden Farquer, younger brother to longtime successful youth rodeo star, Colton Farquer, established a reputation all his own on the rodeo scene with an All-Around Cowboy title at the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca, Nevada from July 2 to 7. With competitors from three Canadian provinces and nine U.S. states vying for top honors, Caden erupted to stellar performances in cutting, team roping and tie down roping to snare five buckles, a trophy saddle and the spectacle that is his own brand new trailer.

Fishing Report

I just returned from a camping trip and couldn't believe all the fees that I had to pay in order to camp a few days at the lake. There were fees like fishing fees, day use fees, second car fees, launching fees, dog fees, camping fees, and more. As much as I tried to ignore all the fees and just tried to focus on having a good time, it was hard to not feel a little unhappy. I don't know, maybe it's always been that way; this time definitely seemed different. The one fee that seemed to ...

Tight Lines - Outdoor Journals A Satisfying Read

August 12, 1956 was a Sunday and like most days during the summer, I was camped with my parents at Hermit Valley in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. That particular Sunday however, we were joined by my dad's brother, my Uncle Joe Moyer, his wife my Aunt Elinore, and my cousins Darrell, Ron, and Harvey Moyer and our Grandfather Ed "Pop" Moyer. Dad and I were off fishing when our kinfolk arrived, and soon everyone was fishing as well. Logically, we had fresh trout for dinner that night. I had totally forgotten this rather ordinary summer day but was reminded ...
