Fishing Report

Last week I was able to get out fishing, it's been a while since I've been out. My partner became ill the night before leaving me to fish by myself. I had my dog with me but she wasn't much help lying on the bottom of the boat, dead asleep most of the day. At one point I even heard her snoring! She did provide me with a little excitement when she decided to put her two front paws on the edge of the boat and when she tried to run to the edge of the boat ...

Young Stars, Rookies And The Old Master Make Their Marks At NHRA Opener

The 52nd Annual NHRA O'Reilly Auto Parts Winter Nationals felt some of the wrath of Mother Nature, with the final session of qualifying on Saturday, Feb. 11 being washed out by rain. The rain lightened up overnight, decreasing to a minor drizzle early Sunday morning. This caused a minor delay to the start of Sunday's final eliminations. Once the rain stopped, the overcast with minor bursts of blue sky and sunshine provided for some highly optimal weather conditions, improving the performance of the racecars. Race teams took advantage of these optimal conditions and turned up the wick, giving ...

Fishing Report

I almost hate to mention that spring is almost here, but it is! I'm already seeing some early signs. A couple trees in my neighborhood have started to bloom and the water temperatures in our local lakes and delta have slowly been increasing. Another sign to me is having daylight after 5 p.m. Like most changes in seasons, it happens before most people realize. I'm still hoping for a few solid days of rain or even an early spring cold spell, but judging from the past couple of days, who knows what's going to happen? I ...

Tight Lines - Super Bowl Fishing

While I am a pretty good football fan, once my local teams have been eliminated from the quest for the Super Bowl, I'd rather go fishing than watch some other teams spar in the Super Bowl. If you stop and think about it, there are almost always no crowds out on the water on Super Bowl Sunday. You've got the lake or stream pretty much to yourself.

Fishing Report

Several years ago in an angler's online forum, I wrote about our artificial baits becoming better than the fisherman. I had recently lost several tournaments to less skilled and experienced anglers who beat me with a bait that wasn't released yet to the public. Lately there's been a new bait that's really making a lot of noise. It's called the Alabama Rig or Umbrella Rig; originally used in salt water fishing to mimic a small school of bait, it's been scaled down to be used in fresh water, and has been the winning bait ...

Fishing Report

A lot of people that I've been talking to are concerned about the lack of rain we've had so far this season. Through writing this column, I've learned that there's a definite pattern in the weather from year to year. It seems like every fourth year we have a similar dry spell and then all of sudden, we are hit by a series of big storms that just about make up for all the lack of rain. Four years ago the delta along with other surrounding waterways had to be shut down as they were unsafe ...

Area Funny Car Team Shines At Bakersfield March Meet

Richard Townsend of Oakdale and his "Nitroholic" nostalgia Funny Car team had been working hard during the off-season in preparation for the NHRA Heritage series season opener. Their hard work paid off, as the 1969 bodied Chevy Camaro Funny Car came alive all weekend. Townsend opened his qualifying effort with a career best 5.75 second at 249.86 mph pass, which would hold for the fifth position. There were 29 Funny Cars vying for one of the 16 available qualifying positions, which featured a 5.904 second "bump" to get into the show. There were a lot of big ...

Fishing Report

My first impression of the Delta was that as long as I stayed within sight of where I launched my boat, that I would be able to find my way back. I was also frustrated with all the vegetation making it nearly impossible to fish my favorite baits. My navigation problem was solved with experience and the help of a GPS and after a while I learned to read the vegetation and I actually look for vegetation now. Some of my biggest fish caught on the Delta have come from some of the thickest vegetation. Several years ago California Department ...
