Oakdale Bassmasters Go Top-Six

A haul of 19.56 pounds from five bass earned Oakdale's Ryan Vilmur a fifth place finish and cash winnings from a California Bass Federation tournament at Clear Lake on July 21. Vilmur, pictured here with two of his hefty catches, finished just .01 pounds ahead of sixth place fisherman Deacon Fernandez, also of Oakdale. Both used homemade Deacon Jigs and made their catches in 20 feet of water amongst rock piles. Tournament participants were not required to bring their own boat. FISHING REPORT

Five years ago I purchased a 75 gallon fish tank from someone selling it on Craigslist. I got a really good deal on it, my son was five at the time, and what kid doesn't want a fish tank! Since then, I've learned a lot from observing the fish in my tank. One of the many things that I've observed was their reaction to temperature change. If the temperature changes too much either higher or lower they tend to go into a state of shock as they become very lethargic until their bodies adjust to it. What ...

Fishing Report

The first fishing advice I ever received was to be patient. I'm not sure if I even understood the word back then, I just knew that I was expected to wait for the fish to come to me. This time of year, I'm constantly reminded of that advice as the bites are usually harder to come by. There are a couple of things that I do to keep motivated when the fishing gets tough. I always bring a warm thermos of coffee. Just about the time frustration starts to set in, I pull out my thermos and warm ...

Fishing Report

A lot of people that I've been talking to are concerned about the lack of rain we've had so far this season. Through writing this column, I've learned that there's a definite pattern in the weather from year to year. It seems like every fourth year we have a similar dry spell and then all of a sudden, we are hit by a series of big storms that just about make up for all the lack of rain. Seven years ago the Delta along with other surrounding waterways had to be shut down as they were ...

Fishing Report

The best thing about rain this time of the year is that it knocks down the fog. The worst thing about it of course is staying dry. When it comes to purchasing rain gear, you get what you pay for. The least expensive gear might hold up for a trip or two but it's definitely not going to be comfortable. Years ago, I purchased a top of the line rain suit that still provides me comfort and dryness to this day. This morning I was awoken to the sound of rain beating down on ground. As always when seeing ...

Fishing Report

This year, while celebrating Thanksgiving, I mentioned to a family member that I was excited about my upcoming fishing trip. He responded by saying "most guys can't handle waiting six or more hours without getting a bite." I responded by saying "I've waited days for a bite in the past." My trip was set, rain or shine, I was going to go Sturgeon fishing. I was particularly excited about this trip because I was going to be reuniting with friends that date back to Jr. High. We ended up having a great time but unfortunately the bite that ...
