Athlete Of The Week - Dustin VandenBosch

One of the closest races in the Oakdale Invitational on June 11 was a tight thriller in the 9-10 50 meter breast stroke, when Dustin VandenBosch of the Oakdale Gators out-touched the second place finisher by just five one hundredths of a second to win the event. He would go on to claim second in the 100 free, join a first place 100 free relay and second place 100 medley relay as well in a very successful event for the young swimmer.

Fishing Report

Everyone has their favorite colored baits, my favorite colors were always watermelon red, purple, and green pumpkin. I pretty much grew up fishing those colors and believed that everything else was a waste of money. I think otherwise now after having lost to competitors fishing colored baits that I had always thought of as a gimmick. I'll never forget the time I lost to a guy fishing a pink bubblegum colored worm! Several years ago I purchased a few red spinner baits, red being is color that I've always thought of as a springtime color. I fished that ...

Fishing Report

It's been a long time since I've actually planned a fishing trip. Usually, I decide the night before, or the morning of, and am in a mad scramble to get everything ready for a day of fishing. Consequently, that leaves me a lot of times, making last minute phone calls to friends and family searching for someone to fish with. When I realized Veterans' Day was going to be celebrated on a Tuesday this year, I immediately decided that I was going to go fishing that day. The day couldn't have worked out better for me, I ...

Fishing Report

If you're waiting for the weather to cool down a little bit before getting out fishing you're likely to miss out on some of the best fishing of the year. What a lot of anglers don't understand is that the temperature outside is not as important as the temperature of the water. Our day time temperatures may not seem like much of a seasonal change but our days have been getting shorter and our nights longer resulting in less sunlight on the water combined with cooler night time temperatures. Our lake and river temperatures continue to drop ...

Fishing Report

Finally, we had some rain in the forecast and it actually fell on us as well. Like a lot of you, I'm already imagining what the lakes are going to look like once full again and am hoping that this past weekend's rain is the beginning of a record setting rainfall year. Like any change in the weather there are dangers associated with it. One that comes to my mind more than any is the importance of driving safely while trailering a boat in the rain. Without rain to wash it down, the roads become dirty over time ...

Fishing Report

Watch out for the duck hunters, duck hunting season has begun. What's different than years past is that there are very few places locally to safely launch a boat anymore, making the Delta the only option for a lot of boaters and duck hunters. This of course has caused an increase in boat traffic and if you were to ask a duck hunter what they hate the most about hunting the Delta, they would surely say the boat traffic. During my last outing as I was navigating through a foggy stretch of water, I heard four gun shots. I ...

Fishing Report

I just recently celebrated a birthday; I won't tell you which one. I've heard it said a thousand times, "how fast time has passed." Like most of us celebrating a birthday it's hard not looking back. I was reminded of my past recently while I was searching high and low for my birth certificate. I came across an old picture of myself taken while I was in the military. For some reason my roommate took a picture of me while I was reading a Bassmaster Magazine. At that time, I would have never imagined that someday I ...

Fishing Report

Every once in a while even I get confused as to where I should go fishing. I've been reading about the salmon that are being caught in the North Delta as well as the striped bass that are being caught pretty much everywhere in the Delta. Like a lot of anglers, I wanted to catch my first salmon of the year but also wanted to make sure that I caught something. So, off to Fisherman's Warehouse I went. It's been a while since I've been there; it hasn't changed much over the years. If you ...

Fishing Report

With the water levels being so low my choices for fishing this weekend have really been limited. Fortunately the bite in the Delta is finally starting to pick up and soon the water will be too cold for everyone to swim in except for the fish. This year is different than the last 20 in that I'll be targeting stripers, salmon, and possibly a sturgeon before the end of the winter. I've got an idea of what I want to do and how I'm going to do it but I've yet to try it out on ...

Fishing Report

Thursday morning on my way to work I was surprised to see rain clouds in the distance and a little mist in the air. Working with children, rainy days can be quite the challenge as they all want to play in the rain. Fish on the other hand aren't going to get anymore wet, but they do become more active when it rains. The rain has several effects on them. As the water rises, it not only provides them more area, but it washes bugs and debris into the water. The smaller fish are attracted to the food being ...

Fishing Report

Every year, there are new fishing products that come out that quickly become the hot item. Back in the mid to late 80's, it was the Salt and Pepper Grub. They couldn't make them fast enough. Now, I don't know anyone that uses them. I've always wondered how something that was so effective in years past can lose its effectiveness. Most anglers will tell you that the fish have become conditioned to that particular bait and can no longer be fooled by that bait. My response to that argument is that there are very few if ...
