The 26th Annual NHRA Sonoma Nations, at the Sonoma Raceway, entered final eliminations with track records being set in each of the top two professional categories on Sunday, July 28. In Top Fuel, David Grubnic and the Optima/Advanced team led the way, following his blistering 3.756 at 324.26 mph qualifying effort during the Friday evening qualifying session. All in all, six Top Fuel cars ran in the 3.7 second zone during the optimal Friday night qualifying session.

A haul of 19.56 pounds from five bass earned Oakdale's Ryan Vilmur a fifth place finish and cash winnings from a California Bass Federation tournament at Clear Lake on July 21. Vilmur, pictured here with two of his hefty catches, finished just .01 pounds ahead of sixth place fisherman Deacon Fernandez, also of Oakdale. Both used homemade Deacon Jigs and made their catches in 20 feet of water amongst rock piles. Tournament participants were not required to bring their own boat. Five years ago I purchased a 75 gallon fish tank from someone selling it on Craigslist. I got a really good deal on it, my son was five at the time, and what kid doesn't want a fish tank! Oakdale youth water polo talent Emily Bennett was selected to the eighth grade and under 'Development' USA National Water Polo training team. She competed with the nation's top 70 athletes in her age division for a spot on the 28-person squad. If selected to the top 13, she will represent the USA in International competition later this summer.

When the last chunk of earth finally settled back to the arena floor at the 62nd Annual Oakdale Saddle Club Rodeo, New Mexico's Jim Ross Cooper emerged as the lone cash-winner in multiple events to seal the honor as the 2013 All-Around Champion. He joined a host of buckle-winners that included Oakdale's Norm Mendenhall, a team roping champion alongside Allen Pruitt. Local cowboys Joe Murry (Oakdale) and Frank Perry claimed top honor is the 50-and-over Gold Card team roping event as well.
