Fishing Report

Fishing during the summer months is definitely not for someone who doesn't like a little sunlight. This past week was extremely hot during the day causing even me to head back towards the dock. Not knowing how hot it was until I got behind the wheel of my truck I saw that it was 107 degrees. Once getting home I ended up sleeping the rest of the day while trying to regain some of the energy the sun had taken from me. Originally, I had planned to get off the water by noon but noon came and I decided ...

Oakdale High alum John Brunk made his final day as a member of the Chico State Track & Field team a memorable one at the NCAA DII Track and Field National Championships, earning a spot on the All-America podium in the decathlon. Competing in 10 events over two days, Brunk posted personal bests in the 110-meter hurdles, the 1,500-meter run (with a winning time of 4:23.90), and matched his personal record in the pole vault, clearing 15-01. In the process, Brunk snagged his second decathlon All-America honor with 7,351 points, good for sixth place overall out of ...

Fishing Report

Summer vacation has officially started for my family, this week we've been spending the first part of it camping at Lake Pardee. Actually, I'm typing this report from the picnic table of my campsite. Currently, we're the only family camping mid-week, making it even more enjoyable. The fishing has been good; the early morning kokanee bite is great, I've even been able to catch a few during the middle of the day. The first night was rough though, as expected, my 2-year-old wasn't on the same sleeping schedule as the rest of us. Night number ...

Fishing Report

Last week while reading the fishing report from Lake Pardee, I read that some of the regulars believed that if the cows were lying down in the morning, fishing was going to be tough, if they were standing, the bite was supposed to be good. So, on my way up to the lake I looked for the first cow nearest the lake and to my joy it was standing. I'm not usually one to buy into superstitions but this one I had to test for myself as it was different than any other that I've heard of before ...

Fishing Report

If you would have told me 10 years ago that someday I'd be selling my bass boat and buying a multi species boat I would have laughed at you. I did just that though and I'm not looking back. For years now while writing this report, I've often felt a little out of the touch with some of the reports being that I primarily fished for bass. If I caught a trout, catfish, striped bass, or anything else, it was while I was fishing for largemouth bass. That's all changed in the past few years and ...

Fishing Report

Growing up, I never used to wear sunglasses. Looking back, I can't believe that I fished as long as I did without sunglasses. It wasn't until I was in my 20's that I realized the benefits of a good pair of sunglasses. I was fishing with a friend one day when he started talking about how great his sunglasses were. When I asked him how much he paid for them, I laughed at him and told him that I would never pay more than $10 for a pair of sunglasses. A couple of months later, he purchased ...

Fishing Report

About ten years ago, I started a fishing club at the school where I work. We practiced several times of the week while I taught them how to cast, tie knots, spool their reels, and anything else that I thought they would need to know to get them started. In order to keep them interested, we scheduled a few trips out to some of our local lakes and had little competitions amongst each other to see who was going to catch the first and biggest fish. The club ended up being a huge success but unfortunately after four years my ...

Fishing Report

Last week I wrote about taking my dad out fishing for the day. The response I got from that column highlighted what I believe is a growing trend among today's youth. There are far too many of them that have never been fishing. I can understand a kid that is 10 or 12 years old, but there are teens out there that have yet to go fishing. While doing a little research on the Internet, I came across an article where the author challenged his readers to take at least two kids out fishing each year. I really hope ...

Fishing Report

A lot of people that I've been talking to are concerned about the lack of rain we've had so far this season. Through writing this column, I've learned that there's a definite pattern in the weather from year to year. It seems like every fourth year we have a similar dry spell and then all of a sudden, we are hit by a series of big storms that just about make up for all the lack of rain. Seven years ago the Delta along with other surrounding waterways had to be shut down as they were ...

Fishing Report

The best thing about rain this time of the year is that it knocks down the fog. The worst thing about it of course is staying dry. When it comes to purchasing rain gear, you get what you pay for. The least expensive gear might hold up for a trip or two but it's definitely not going to be comfortable. Years ago, I purchased a top of the line rain suit that still provides me comfort and dryness to this day. This morning I was awoken to the sound of rain beating down on ground. As always when seeing ...

Fishing Report

This year, while celebrating Thanksgiving, I mentioned to a family member that I was excited about my upcoming fishing trip. He responded by saying "most guys can't handle waiting six or more hours without getting a bite." I responded by saying "I've waited days for a bite in the past." My trip was set, rain or shine, I was going to go Sturgeon fishing. I was particularly excited about this trip because I was going to be reuniting with friends that date back to Jr. High. We ended up having a great time but unfortunately the bite that ...

Fishing Report

Over the years there have been several poaching arrests on our local waters. As I was launching my boat several years ago I witnessed an older gentleman unloading a cooler into a car which was passing by; what seemed strange is that he continued to fish afterwards. Several days after while watching the news, I saw that several people were arrested in Stockton for poaching. They were caught with bags full of Bluegill and Striped Bass. As much as I've seen my fair share of anglers who seem to be taking more fish than they are supposed to, I ...
