On May 9, 1918 as the war in Europe continued to rage, the wheat crop for the state of Oklahoma was expected to drop due to a harsh winter. Lela Fay Brookover was the fifth child born, to Campbell and Edith Brookover in Shawnee, Oklahoma. In 1923 the Brookover family, now with six children, headed for California and what Campbell and Edith hoped were more prosperous times. Paonia resident, Virginia Goins, died at her home Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015. She was 81. A celebration of life will be held in California at a later date. Virginia Ann Valine was born in Chico, Calif., Jan. 1, 1934, to Joaquin and Edna (McKinney) Valine. She grew up and attended school in Chico. She moved to Paonia a few years ago to live with her daughter. Mrs. Goins enjoyed her children and grandchildren, embroidery, sewing, gardening, wildlife, and visiting coal mines with her daughter.

DR. JACK DARYL ALPERS

Dr. Alpers was born in Portola, CA on Valentine's Day and died October 8, 2015 in Oakdale. He was raised on a dairy in Valley Home, graduated from Valley Home Elementary School and Oakdale High School. Jack went on to graduate with a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of California at Davis. At the time, Dr. Alpers was the youngest student to be accepted into the veterinary program. In college he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.

Jaylen Craig Franks was born in Modesto, Ca on November 14th 1958, to the proud parents of Wanda Breshears and Fralie Franks. He grew up and resided in Oakdale, Ca his entire life. Jay attended Oakdale schools and graduated Oakdale High in 1976. He played high school football and baseball and developed a lifelong love for playing and teaching the sports to others. He first married right out of high school and tragically lost a son named Craig, but was blessed later with a daughter named Kendra.
