A Modesto man, out on bail for drug charges, who police say led them on a high speed chase in a stolen car, was shot by a local homeowner in the early morning hours of Nov. 13 after attempting to break in to the residence despite being warned to halt.

Three sets of gondola-type dual trailers filled with 140,000 pounds of dried and hulled walnuts were surreptitiously taken from GoldRiver Orchards off Enterprise Road and Highway 120 in Escalon. Authorities believe the theft of the nuts, valued at $400,000, occurred sometime between 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30 and 7 a.m. Thursday. Oct. 31.

After a month long investigation, a former Boy Scout troop leader and Oakdale business owner was arrested by Stanislaus County Sheriff's detectives on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 5 for engaging in sexual acts with a minor and showing the minor pornography.

A Stanislaus County Superior Court criminal complaint released on Tuesday, Aug 20 charges that Felix Valverde of Oakdale shot both Scott and Janet Pettit in their Modesto home. The Pettit's 25-year-old son, Brandon, is also accused of the murders in the complaint.

With a history of being a security guard with a license to carry a firearm and reported past boasting of phantom employment within the fire service, it may not be surprising that Brandon Pettit, 25, was arrested in connection with the murder of his parents. The bodies of his mother and father were discovered after an Aug. 8 house fire in Modesto.

Oakdale police have obtained a felony arrest warrant for the mother of a 44-day-old girl that died in December. Toxicology results returned in January showed the infant had a high level of methamphetamine in its system at the time of its death.
