School District Gains Focus To Aid At-Risk Students

As is customary, the first school board meeting of Oakdale Joint Unified for the 2017-2018 school year was short, yet information packed. Schools were back in session for the new year as of Thursday, Aug. 10 and the board members gathered for their first session of the new year as well.

Round-Ups The Order Of The (School) Day

Amidst the excitement of greeting friends, students getting ready to head back to school this week at Oakdale junior and senior high schools were busy on their respective campuses. From buying gym clothes to finding their lockers, taking a quick tour of the campus to reacquaint themselves with classrooms – or see them for the first time – the incoming seventh through 12th grade students reported for their Round-Ups over a couple of days this past week.

Careers In Education Session Scheduled

Educational employment opportunities are soaring in Stanislaus County and the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) is hosting a Careers in Education Day and Substitute Teacher Recruitment Job Fair on Saturday, Aug. 12. The event is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Martin Petersen Event Center, 720 12th St., Modesto. This free event will provide information to those interested in learning how to become a professional educator in California as a credentialed or substitute teacher.

Get On-Line

In efforts to stream line paperwork for parents as well as staff, Oakdale Joint Unified has extended the Aeries Student Information System to all grade levels, effective this 2017-2018 school year. In addition to the parent portal, Data Confirmation is now available for update on-line. A workshop complete with laptops and staff has been in place this week to aide parents with set-up of one or both of the on-line services.

AWARD WINNERS

David Nichols and Halena Hill of Sierra View Elementary School were recently named recipients of the 2017 Hope of America Award. The students were selected for recognition based on their academic achievement, moral leadership and caring for others. The awards were given by the Oakdale Kiwanis Club.

ADMIRING ART

Cloverland fifth grade student Mia Peterson admires the color used on a butterfly painting at the Annual Art Show event hosted shortly before the school year's end at Cloverland Elementary School. Cloverland was the first school in the district to pioneer the Art Corps Program, which encourages and educates students in the area of art education.

Dotinga Receives Cal Poly Daisy J. Hudson Scholarship

In ceremonies hosted on May 19 at the 2016-17 Agricultural Engineering Society End of the Year Banquet, 26 Cal Poly students from the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering (BRAE) Department were awarded various irrigation scholarships including the Daisy J. Hudson Agricultural Irrigation Career Scholarship, the John Merriam Memorial Scholarship, and the Mid-Pacific Water Users Conference for USBR Scholarship.

Scholarship Additions

A total of 288 Scholarships were awarded graduating Oakdale High School Seniors in early May. The event was hosted at Gene Bianchi Community Center. The 49th Annual Senior Awards Night awarded funds to the tune of $184,000 to graduates toward future education efforts.

It was three packed days for students, families and administrators as Oakdale Joint Unified School District hosted graduations for Oakdale Charter School, East Stanislaus High, Oakdale Junior High and Oakdale High School during the past week. All but Oakdale Charter were hosted at Oakdale High School.
