Rachel Scott was the first student killed in the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. Her family found her diary that contained an essay called "My Ethics, My Codes of Life" and then developed a program called Rachel's Challenge, which in part, challenges students to eliminate prejudice, set big goals, and be mindful of their influence.

Fair Oaks Elementary School has made a switch from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to the Parent Teacher Club (PTC). The PTA group decided to disband and become a new type of parent-teacher organization because they felt a PTC would better meet the needs of the school.

Oakdale High School senior Madison Lane was sworn in and took her seat on the Oakdale Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees at the Aug. 13 regular meeting. Sworn in by board president Mike Tozzi, Lane was selected as the student representative to the board for the 2012-2013 school year and will vote on matters before the board, except for personnel matters.
Culinary arts are on the menu of offerings at the new campus of Oakdale Community School which opens Wednesday, Aug. 15 at South Yosemite Avenue and Wakefield Drive. The school, which is run by the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE), is offering the new culinary arts program to its own students and also Oakdale High School students.
School starts Tuesday, Aug. 14 in the Oakdale Joint Unified School District, so the high school and junior high school will have their annual "Round Ups" for students entering seventh through 12th grades.
