Young athletes representing 26 local junior high and middle schools are preparing to compete at the 69th Annual Harold Pope Junior Relays on Saturday, May 7, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Modesto Junior College Track & Field. Sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE), Education Foundation of Stanislaus County and Sutter Health, the public is invited to attend. Admission and parking are free.
Valley Charter High School's (VCHS) Open House is slated for Thursday, April 28 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school (108 Campus Way, Modesto). The open house is an opportunity for all parents and prospective students to learn more about the school and its collaboration with Modesto Junior College. The award-winning VCHS program, recipient of the 2015 California Gold Ribbon and multiple national honors, includes college-preparatory academic programs for all students and outstanding Early College, choir, robotics, leadership and club opportunities.
The Modesto Rotary Club and the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) will honor the 2016 Stanislaus County Teacher of the Year Finalists and announce the selection of four as 2016 Stanislaus County Teachers of the Year at a Rotary luncheon on May 3 at the DoubleTree Hotel at noon. The four selected as Teachers of the Year will each receive a $1,000 cash award from the Modesto Rotary Club Foundation and a $700 Nasco gift card. Mocse Credit Union also sponsors the event and provides funding for the awards, decorations and lunch for the student entertainers.
Stanislaus County junior high school students are gearing up for the 12th Annual Stanislaus County Academic Pentathlon. Approximately 150 students are slated to participate in the one-day series of tests, speeches and essays. The public is invited to attend the culminating event, the Super Quiz and Awards Presentation, on Saturday, April 30 at Prescott Junior High School, 2243 West Rumble Road, Modesto. There is no charge for admission. The Super Quiz will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Awards Ceremony will begin at 2 p.m.
The Oakdale High School Academic Decathlon team has wrapped up another successful year. In March, the OHS team traveled to Sacramento for the 16th consecutive year as the Stanislaus County representative.
Valley Home students were recently acknowledged for their scholastic efforts at a Student of the Month assembly. Students honored were: Jesse Ruddy, Joshua Blasengym, Seth Presant, Dylan Fmura, Carlos Astorga, Colter Rice, Alex Felix, Ryan Wells and Skylah Mecca (not pictured).
From learning the products of California to getting a chance for an up close look at some farm animals, the students at Valley Home School (kindergarten through eighth grade) were busy all day Thursday, with presentations from two different groups of FFA students.
The Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) is hosting a Teacher Recruitment Job Fair on Saturday, April 9 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at SCOE's downtown offices, 1100 H St., Modesto. This year's job fair is open to fully-credentialed teachers or intern-eligible candidates and credential completion candidates by August 2016 (verified by Program Completion letter or Intern Eligible letter) who pre-register on-line by Wednesday, March 30 at www.edjoin.org. Admission is free. (Candidates who do not pre-register will be admitted into the fair at 10 a.m.)
