New Royalty Crowned At Winter Homecoming

Prior to the Oakdale varsity boys basketball game on Friday night, Feb. 2, Oakdale High School crowned its Winter Homecoming royalty. Starting off the festivities, emcee Pete Simoncini announced that the Senior Class of 2018 won the hall decorating competition.

Hicks Earns California Kindergarten Association Honor

It has been 15 years since Deborah Hicks first began teaching kindergarten. The 22-year teaching veteran of the Oakdale Joint Unified School District was recently honored with the Audrey Sanchez Teacher Enhancement Award at the annual California Kindergarten Association (CKA) Conference in Santa Clara.

Oakdale Junior High School Royalty, Dalton Vargas, left, and Victoria Blanc were named the overall 2018 Royal Rams winners earlier this month during the OJHS Royal Ram competition. Proceeds from the event benefit the annual eighth grade Great America trip.

MJC Sends Agriculture Students To Competition

Modesto Junior College sent a team of six students to compete in the annual Young Farmers and Ranchers Discussion Meet contest in Anaheim on Dec. 3, with each contestant giving a 30-second opening statement and a one minute closing statement during the 25 minute committee discussions. This year's competition featured questions about public skepticism of foreign trade, perceptions on family farms with the rise of incorporation, how to combat increasing legal and regulatory obstacles, and how the Farm Bureau can better support first generation farmers.

Leadership Academy Hosts Education Day

Stanislaus County Leadership Academy is partnering with Leadership Modesto on Friday, Dec. 8 for Education Day. Students taking part in the countywide program will meet with current Leadership Modesto participants in the morning with a "Getting to Know You" rotation before hearing from Superintendent Tom Changnon on the "Snapshot of Education in Stanislaus County."
