Science Fair First Week In May

The Oakdale Joint Unified School District's annual Science Fair will take place from May 3-6 at the FES Hall located on North Lee Avenue, across from Fair Oaks Elementary School.

Teen Earns Degree Before Diploma

On April 30, Oakdale teen Alex Harris will receive an associate's degree in Chemistry from Modesto Junior College - one month before he receives his high school diploma. And, after just one year of enrolling at the junior college.

Sierra View Wins Science Olympiad

Sierra View Elementary School brought home the championship trophy from the 13th Annual Elementary Science Olympiad held on April 24. The event took place at Hickman Elementary School and hosted approximately 300 competing elementary school children from 21 schools throughout the region.

Students Discover Florida Over Spring Break

Spring Break in Florida generally conjures up images of beach parties and swarms of teens and college students who aren't there to learn about the delicate ecosystem of the Everglades. But for some students from Oakdale Junior High School, spending their recent Spring Break in Florida on an educational tour gave them a new appreciation for learning and new perspectives on science and history.

District, Teachers Reach Agreement

The Oakdale Teachers Association and the Oakdale Joint Unified School District reached an agreement on a contract for teachers for the upcoming school year on April 15. They had reached a tentative agreement on March 30 and on April 14, the OTA held a general membership meeting to discuss the agreement, with the ratification vote taking place the following day.

Student Portraits Create Memories For Orphans

Oakdale High School art students have recently made a difference in the lives of orphans halfway around the world. Earlier this year, the students drew portraits from photographs of orphans in Uganda and sent them to the children as keepsakes.

Summer School Cancelled

Summer school will not be in session, as the Oakdale Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees voted 5-1 to suspend it for this year at the April 12 regular meeting.

Program Cut Impact Felt On Campus

Five years ago former police chief Gary Hampton and Oakdale Unified School District embarked on a joint venture between the police department and the local schools facilitated by a special grant to employ two School Resource Officers (SRO), one for the high school and one that would rove between the junior high and the various elementary schools. It was around this same time that the DARE, Drug Abuse and Resistance Education, program was axed in favor of the SRO program.

Donations, Volunteers Sought For Sober Grad

Oakdale Sober Grad Night is right around the corner. The all-night safe and sober celebration event for Oakdale High School graduates follows graduation on Friday, May 28 and runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The event is held at Sierra View Elementary School.

OHS Bound For Occupational Olympics, Career Expo

Approximately 700 Stanislaus County high school students, including Oakdale High School students, will converge on the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock today, Wednesday, March 24 for the 25th Annual Occupational Olympics and Career Exposition (OOCE). The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 1 p.m.

S.O.S. Run For Schools Sees Tremendous Turnout

More than 370 participants woke up early and turned out to "Support Oakdale Schools" on Saturday morning, March 20 for the first S.O.S. Fun Run/Walk to raise money for schools in the Oakdale Joint Unified School District.

Oakdale Teams Earn Top Awards At Science Olympiad

The Oakdale High School and Oakdale Junior High School are both advancing to the Northern California (NorCal) Science Olympiad competition set for Saturday, April 17 at Clovis North High School in Fresno since recently performing well at the regional competition.

School Staffers Protest Cuts

Teachers and school employees in the Oakdale Joint Unified School District showed up to school on the morning of Thursday, March 4 wearing black clothing and decorated their cars with black balloons and signs. Banners also hung along school fences and walls, and flyers were distributed to show parents and passersby their opposition to statewide budget cuts to education. "Budget Cuts Don't Heal," "Quality Education Is Priceless," and "Save Our School" were some of the slogans that were posted around the campuses.

School Projects Moving Forward

Robbins Closes Out Career At Riverbank Schools

Riverbank Unified School District (RUSD) lead grounds man, Ronnie Robbins, is settling in to a new role, retirement, after completing 33 years of service with the district. Robbins originally worked at Rio Altura Elementary School, which is now the site of Riverbank Language Academy, for 10 years. Then he moved to Cardozo Middle School and spent a year and a half as the groundskeeper there. The rest of his 22-year career was spent as the lead grounds man for the school district, working at a variety of locations.

Orchestra Concert For Kids Of All Ages

The Modesto Junior College Community Orchestra, directed by Anne Martin, will present a concert for kids of all ages tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the auditorium of the Media and Performing Arts Center on east campus. The concert has an early start time of 7p.m. to accommodate families with young children.

Oakdale High Marching Band, Colorguard Take First Place

Driving rain, wind, and cold weather couldn't stop the Oakdale High School Marching Band recently as it took first place at the Lincoln Review of Champions in Stockton. On Nov. 17 bands from the Bay Area, Fresno, and the Central Coast flocked to the review because it's one of the last of the competitive marching band season, which coincides with the end of the football season.

More Salmon Spawning For Student Study This Year

The number of Chinook salmon returning to spawn in the Stanislaus River at the Knights Ferry recreation area appears to be one of the best in several years. Fourth graders in the Oakdale Joint Unified School District recently witnessed the spawning activity and did field studies as part of their state standards salmon unit.

OHS Scholars Honored With American Heritage Scholarships

This fall, 166 high school juniors and seniors from nine high schools throughout the county participated in the American Heritage Scholarship Series essay contest, a competition sponsored, in part, by Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) and other entities. Nineteen students were honored for their essays at an awards ceremony on Nov. 20 at the SCOE Board Room, Modesto. A total of $10,000 in scholarships awards were presented, which included one $2,000 scholarship, two $1,500 scholarships, two $1,000 scholarships, four $500 scholarships, and ten $100 cash awards.

Top Spellers Headed For County Contest

Top spellers from area schools will compete in Stanislaus County Elementary Spelling Championship today, Nov. 7, at Johansen High School, 641 Norseman Drive, Modesto. The Elementary Spelling Championship is for children in fourth through sixth grades.
