Exchange Program Seeking Area Representatives

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking individuals to serve as Area Representatives in the local community. ASSE provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. Students are 15 to 18 years of age, have passed a series of academic and character requirements and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their 'American Adventure.'

Students of Cloverland and Fair Oaks elementary schools were treated to a special surprise as they returned from summer break earlier this school year. As they said their goodbyes to the respective campuses last May, a construction crew got to work.

COME TO THE BARN

The property surrounding the grounds of the new Oakdale School Farm was quickly filled last Wednesday evening, as Ag enthusiasts gathered for the annual Oakdale FFA Welcome Back Barbecue. The 26-acre site will be used by Ag students of all grade levels for generations to come. Over 700 hot dogs were barbecued and served to all in attendance at the informational OHS FFA meeting on Aug. 30. The meeting was the first time for many to see the site which will now be utilized for Agriculture Education in Oakdale schools.

Young Rams Enjoy Club Rush Opportunity

Seventh and eighth graders at Oakdale Junior High School had the chance to learn more about the on campus clubs, service organizations, sports teams and more during the 'Club Rush' event offered during the lunch period on Friday, Aug. 25. This was a new event for the junior high and drew plenty of participants to see the wide variety of opportunities to get involved with at the school.

New Program At Stan State

Stanislaus State (CSU Stanislaus) in Turlock has received a grant from California Humanities to stage 'Native Voices: Stories from the Indian Boarding School,' a live performance by the contemporary theatre group Native Voices. Based on first-person narratives, videos, and historical documents, this collection of stories depicts the reality and repercussions of the American Indian boarding school system from the late 1800s to the present whose motto was "Kill the Indian and save the man." The performances are Sept. 20 in Modesto and Sept. 21 on the Stan State campus.

The new slates of class officers, from incoming freshmen to the seniors in the Class of 2018, have been selected and are on the job at Oakdale High School. The student leaders have been charged with guiding their classes through a successful school year.

Brown Joins Stanislaus County Leadership Academy

Stanislaus County Leadership Academy will be hosting its first class meeting at the Petersen Event Center in Rooms 1 and 2, at 720 12th St., Modesto, on Friday, Sept. 8. This first class will bring together 30 students representing 18 individual high schools throughout Stanislaus County who were chosen after a rigorous interview process. The class includes Oakdale High School student Ethan Brown.

The Oakdale High School Ag program has been getting a bit more attention as of late. While for the students privy to the program during the past handful of years, the notoriety comes honestly and earned – the program growth seems imminent. Most especially so as Oakdale Joint Unified completes Phase 1 of the Oakdale School Farm, situated on the northwest end of town.

Central Valley Veterans History Project Launched

U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) recently published the first in a series of short video clips from interviews he conducted for the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project. The video, shared on Rep. Denham's Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages, is also the inaugural post in his Thank-A-Vet Thursday social media initiative.
