The Intermediate Choir performed under the guidance of District Instructor Kathy Larson. At side, taking one final bow, Beginning Choir Instructor Cynthia Hofmann, left, was publicly thanked on Wednesday night, May 17 by fellow instructor Kathy Larson. Larson shared the news of the long time music teacher's retirement with an audience who replied with a standing ovation. Hofmann spent over 28 years as a music educator with the Oakdale Joint Unified School District.

Music Makers Entertain Appreciative Audience At OJHS

Oakdale Junior High students and those from all four elementary schools – Cloverland, Fair Oaks, Magnolia and Sierra View – came together for a special event this past week. They entertained a packed house at Oakdale Junior High, showcasing some newly acquired musical skills, with beginning, intermediate and junior high band performances.

Oakdale Junior High School students Leilani Roper and Jordan Womack were recently named the recipients of the Kiwanis Hope of America award by the Kiwanis Club of Oakdale. The students were chosen for the honor based on their grades, leadership, character and caring for those around them.

Knights Ferry School representatives of the Paw Prints Press, recently toured the Oakdale Leader office for an inside look at the local weekly paper operations. School Newspaper Advisor, Kimberly McCarthy accompanied the fifth and sixth grade students on their field trip.

Magnolia Elementary fourth grader, Amelia Waterman, top photo, examines a find while panning for gold in Columbia. The elementary school students were treated to a field trip to the historic mountain town recently. At side, fourth grade teacher Rachelle Savage was called upon to place her hands in the mining water and demonstrate its temperature. The ice cold water held treasure of minerals, gems and potential gold for Magnolia Elementary miners to pan for during their field trip.

“Maker Hoopla” Offered

Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) will hold its first ever "Maker Hoopla" in Modesto on Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Petersen Event Center, 720 12th St., Modesto. SCOE's Maker Hoopla is a free, hands-on, family friendly event for elementary grade students to "learn through doing" in a social environment.

School Board Session Sees Talk Of Bullying

It was a Monday night comprised primarily of first and second readings of budget and policy for Oakdale Joint Unified School Board members. With just one final meeting remaining in the 2016-17 school year, agenda items were generally uneventful in the way of general business. However, what was eventful was the 'Public Comments' portion of the meeting, which managed to occupy as much time as the overall agenda. Community members addressed the board with varying concerns, pertaining to their students and policy.

Local Scholarships Awarded To Graduating OHS Seniors

A total of 288 scholarships were awarded on the evening of May 4 to graduating Oakdale High School seniors, hosted at the Gene Bianchi Community Center. The 49th Annual Senior Awards Night awarded funds to the tune of $184,000 to graduates toward future education efforts.

Valley Charter Open House

Valley Charter High School's (VCHS) Enrollment Kick-Off is slated for Tuesday, May 9 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school (108 Campus Way, Modesto). The Enrollment Kick-Off is an opportunity for all parents and prospective students to tour the facilities and learn more about the school and its collaboration with Modesto Junior College. The award-winning VCHS program, recipient of the 2015 California Gold Ribbon and multiple national honors, includes college-preparatory academic programs for all students and outstanding Early College, choir, robotics, video game design, leadership and club opportunities.
