Oakdale's Robert "Bob" Gilbert, who, along with his family, was honored earlier this year by the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce with their Lifetime Achievement Award, passed away at age 93 on Sunday, Nov. 20 late in the evening.

Oakdale High School may now add one more group to that of its first place trophy winning list, as the OHS Marching Band took first place honors this past weekend at the Lincoln Band Review. This final competition performance earned the group its third First Place trophy for the 2016-2017 school year.

The Oakdale 12 and Under Galaxy Soccer team recently competed in the Cal North-California Youth Soccer Association District VIII tournament. The girls went 4-0 scoring a total of 28 points to finish second in the large two day tournament held at Mary Grogan Soccer Complex in Modesto. The championship was decided by a points system, with the first place team recording a total of 29 points.

At its Nov. 16 quarterly meeting, the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) approved approximately $28 million in grants to help restore and protect fish and wildlife habitat throughout California, including the Salton Sea. Some of the 17 funded projects will benefit fish and wildlife – including some endangered species – while others will provide the public with access to important natural resources. Several projects will also demonstrate the importance of protecting working landscapes that integrate economic, social and environmental stewardship practices beneficial to the environment, landowners and the local community. Last Saturday the weather was perfect for the annual Salmon Festival. The bridge was full of people looking at the salmon in the Stanislaus River. At the counting station in the river near Riverbank they counted 10,000 currently. J.D. Wikert, Fish Biologist was on hand to answer questions about salmon. Many of the festivalgoers had notebooks and pens; schools gave extra credit for attending. It was a big turnout and a gorgeous day.

U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) on Tuesday introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives – H.R. 6316, the Veterans Earned Their Bonuses Act (VET Bonus Act) – to address the issue of veterans being forced to repay bonuses that were granted by California National Guard (CalGuard) recruiters from 2004 to 2010.
