During the winter months, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Merced Counties are plagued by extremely dense fog which poses a severe hazard to drivers. Typically the fog season begins during the month of November and continues through February. Despite this predictable seasonal occurrence, multi-vehicle accidents are commonplace due to the combination of fog, excessive speeds and traffic congestion.

Homecoming Week festivities wrapped up successfully on Friday, Oct. 18 when the Oakdale High School Mustangs beat Sierra High School at the OHS Corral by a 24-17 final in Friday night football. The satisfying win (See story, photos in Sports, Page B1) capped a busy week that also saw a repeat Powder Puff victory by the Class of 2014 (Page B2) and the crowning of new royalty in the Homecoming Court.

Oakdale fire and rescue crews responded to Valley View Park on Sunday, Oct. 20 regarding a 17-year-old male that had fallen down the hillside toward the river.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15 Stanislaus County sheriff's deputies responded to the report of a suspicious person and vehicle in the 3800 block of Service Road. Deputy Veronica Esquivez and Deputy Kyle Briggs found Irvin Turpitt, 53 of Modesto who tried to flee when deputies arrived. Turpitt, a well-known career criminal, was immediately apprehended and found to be in possession of a reported stolen vehicle. He was also in possession of illegal narcotics, stolen property and had several outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Oakdale Mayor, Pat Paul, was hospitalized at Doctor's Medical Center in Modesto on Tuesday, Oct. 15 for an undisclosed reason. Staff at Doctor's Medical Center confirmed she was still there on Wednesday Oct. 16.

City of Oakdale workers will get a five percent raise in July with the signing of the recent contract for its police, fire, miscellaneous, and management employees. In return the employees have agreed to pay the full eight percent employee share of the PERS retirement costs with the sworn police and fire members paying their full nine percent share.
