International Fest Offered

The 2017 St. Mary's International Festival is on the schedule for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16 and 17 in Oakdale. The festival is designed to celebrate the diverse cultures of Oakdale and will feature events both days.

Library Programs Aimed At All Ages

The Teen/Adult Craft for September at the Oakdale Library will be "Guitar Pick Art." Crafters will use a guitar pick punch to cut out picks from old gift cards and then fashion them into a necklace, keychain, or any unique creation. The activity is scheduled at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Valley Home Joint School District Generates Taxpayer Savings

The Valley Home Joint School District priced refunding bonds on Sept. 6, locking in property taxpayer savings of $1,033,976 over time. Interest rates were at near historic lows, which allowed for the refinancing opportunity, said District officials.

Inaugural Season Kicks Off For New Oakdale Soccer Club

The recently formed Oakdale Soccer Club had its opening ceremonies this past Saturday at T.L. Davis Sports Complex. With over 650 excited and enthusiastic young soccer players storming the complex, the season got off to a solid start. Oakdale Soccer Club President Ami Poncabare and her board members opened the gates at 8 a.m. and the ceremonies began at 8:45 a.m.

MJC Students, Graduates Invited To Job Fair

Modesto Junior College students and graduates are invited to join the Career Development and Transfer Center for the Fall 2017 Job Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 20. The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the outdoor area next to the Center for Advanced Technologies on East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto.

Nonprofit Tax Seminar In Stockton

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration will host a free seminar for nonprofit and exempt organizations on Thursday, Sept. 21 in Stockton. Local nonprofit leaders and tax practitioners are encouraged to attend and learn how state tax laws apply to the operation of their organizations.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Crews continue work all along the East C Street corridor, here on the far eastern end of the project, off North Sixth Avenue, where new water lines are going in. Much of East C Street is torn up, from North Sixth to North Third Avenue, as improvements are made and the roadway put back together. Traffic detours are in place.

Valley Home Station Staffing Levels Remain

A 'Meet Your Chiefs' session at the Valley Home Fire Station – Station 30 in the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District system – was also expected to include an announcement that the station might be 'browned out'. At least during the remainder of the current summer fire season, in favor of moving personnel to cover Knights Ferry, Station 29, on a full time basis.

Mid-Cal Blue Star Moms members Michelle Meade and Barbara Aceves were on hand with an informational booth on Saturday in neighboring Escalon at that community's annual Lions Club Car Show, with pictures for kids to color to include with care packages being prepared for sending to troops overseas. Aceves is a member of the group and Meade is the treasurer; both have children serving in the military. Prices Still Rising At Pump

Average retail gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 4.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.01/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 201 gas outlets in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has increased 1.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.65/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Knights Ferry News

Music filled the streets of town all weekend as Sheather Fest brought in musicians from all over the world. It was warm but a lot cooler than last weekend's temperatures. Festival goers were invited to bring blankets and low-back chairs to sit on a grass hill at The River's Edge restaurant as bands preformed on stage with the river as a backdrop.
