Project Heroes Dinner Scheduled In Oakdale

Pacific Project Heroes is planning its sixth annual Western themed dinner, dance and auction on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Gene Bianchi Community Center, 110 S. Second Ave., in Oakdale.

Oakdale Steps Up Its Western Heritage

The first Western Days festival, sponsored by the Oakdale Tourism and Visitors Bureau, was hosted Friday evening, Sept. 30 featuring a concert by The Dave Russell Band and on Saturday, Oct. 1, with an International Chili Cook Off and a variety of entertaining acts all around the Oakdale Saddle Club Rodeo Grounds.

Oakdale High School Leadership students hosted their annual Sweater and Coat drive the last week of September. Items collected during the weeklong event will now be donated to Oakdale's Center for Human Services, benefitting families in need as the cooler weather sets in.

OID Approves Lucrative Water Sale By 3-2 Vote

In a move that will bring $2 million to Oakdale Irrigation District coffers, district board members, by a 3-2 vote, approved a deal in a special meeting on Sept. 26 to release 8,000 acre-feet of water to neighboring districts. The transfer and sale would also fulfill wildlife official and environmentalist concerns by swelling the river that would assist in fish migration.

High Expectations For Open House

Oakdale Airport will welcome in the community for its Open House, being offered this Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the airport, 8191 Laughlin Road. The event is designed to bring the community a full day of family fun with a variety of festivities including the Wings of Rescue fundraiser and pet adoption event and free Young Eagles flights for the youth.

Gusty Winds Prompt Valley Health Caution

Gusty winds will cause localized blowing dust, which can result in unhealthy concentrations of particulate matter 10 microns and smaller (PM10) over the weekend. Local air pollution officials are issuing a health cautionary statement effective the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 30 through Monday, Oct. 3 throughout the San Joaquin Valley.

McNerney Legislation Seeks Better Internet Access For Vets

Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09), who serves on both the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology and the Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, introduced legislation on Monday to increase broadband internet access for veterans. The Improving Broadband Access for Veterans Act of 2016 (H.R. 6165) directs the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to initiate a Notice of Inquiry examining veterans' current access to broadband internet service and what can be done to increase access, with a focus on low-income veterans and veterans residing in rural areas.
