Healthy Ways Kids Can Get To School

Traffic on roadways increases during the morning and afternoon hours during the school year. During the morning and mid-afternoon, millions of students make their way to and from school. Safe Routes to School National Partnership estimates that as much as 20 to 30 percent of all morning traffic is generated by parents driving their children to school.

SANDLOT STANDOUTS

On Tuesday, Aug. 15, Oakdale's 12u Sandlot team won their third consecutive season championship game. Sandlot Baseball beat the Central Valley Renegades 4-2 to claim the title. Pictured are coaches Anthony Eberhardt, Daniel Krause, and Chris Pereira. Directly next to them are players Dustin Hoekstra, Jacob Guignard, and Cooper Pitney. RED ON THE ROAD

The stands at Sonora High School were full as the Oakdale faithful made the trip up the hill in their red and gold Mustang attire on Friday, Aug. 25. The fans carried signs, chanted and were energetic throughout the non-league football contest, with the defending state champion Mustangs nailing down a decisive 47-13 victory in the season opener.

SCOUT WORK

Keaton Thalman, 6, of Oakdale was out early Saturday morning, Aug. 26 with members of Boy Scout Troop No. 47, painting curbs as part of Stephen Badger's Eagle Scout Project. Badger's project was sponsored by the Oakdale LDS Church and represents one of six Eagle Scout projects Troop No. 47 has slated within the next eight weeks.

Triple-Digit Heat, Wildfires Impact Valley’s Air Quality

Smoke from the South Fork Fire and Empire Fire, both burning in Mariposa County, and emissions from the recent Flat Fire and Hill Fire in Fresno County are affecting air quality in locations throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Triple-digit temperatures coupled with stagnant air are conducive for the formation of ozone. Elevated particulate matter and ozone levels throughout the Valley are prompting Air District officials to issue a health cautionary statement Valley-wide.

Action Packed Weekend At Stockton Arena

Shelter Adoptee Sniffs Her Way To Top Honors

Dazzle, a six-and-a-half year-old cattle dog adopted from the Oakdale Animal Shelter, sniffed her way to first place and a NW3 title at a NACSW (National Association of Canine Scent Work) K9 Nose Work competition in Pacific Palisades earlier this month. Dazzle competed with 29 other dogs of various breeds from Border Collies to Pomeranians and several mixed breeds. She had the fastest combined time of all the dogs entered in the trial as well as finding all the hides in four different searches.

The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is hosting the 12th annual California Day of Preparedness on Saturday, Aug. 26. The day encourages Californians to take steps to prepare for emergencies or disasters in their homes, businesses, schools and communities. Transportation Commission Authorizes SB1 Project Funds

Caltrans announced on Thursday, Aug. 17 that 32 major "fix-it-first" transportation projects can be accelerated a year earlier than planned thanks to anticipated funding from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. The advancement is possible due to nearly $690 million in funding authorized by the California Transportation Commission (CTC).
