Oakdale Mustangs Set Sights On Reclaiming Aca Dec Title

It's a new day and a bit of a new beginning for Oakdale High's 2018 Academic Decathlon Team. For the first time in 17 years the team will approach the 38th Annual Stanislaus County Academic Decathlon minus the pressure of "the streak." A 16-year long winning streak came to an end in 2017 when the team was defeated by the Hughson Huskies.

Homecoming Candidates Selected At Oakdale High School

This week is being observed as the Winter Homecoming at Oakdale High School, with special dress up days and fun activities leading up to Friday night's Homecoming basketball contest. The Mustangs will host Lathrop, looking for a Valley Oak League win. The new royals will also be crowned as part of the evening's festivities.

Ultra Violet Light To Battle Aliens

Not aliens from outer space but aquatic invasive weeds, specifically Eurasian watermilfoil, which have been introduced into our lakes and other waterways by boats, trailers, aquariums and other means. But, a local company, Inventive Resources Inc., is working to eradicate these pests.

Leadership Academy Hosts Media Day

Students participating in the Stanislaus County Leadership Academy will meet on Friday, Feb. 2 for Media Day. Students will learn what media is from a local business, Never Boring Design, as well as the dangers of social media from the Modesto Police Department. The day will conclude with information about Digital Citizenship and The Art of Messaging.

Pet Vouchers Offered At Riverbank Petco

Several pets at the Oakdale Animal Shelter have been going to out of state rescues so there have not been as many adoptable dogs as they have had in the past. The Oakdale Shelter Pet Alliance may have pets available for adoption at the Petco on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.; however, whether or not they get adopted prior to the event, volunteers will have pet vouchers on hand at Petco.

Webb Honored For Service On Irrigation District Board

After 32 years of service on the Oakdale Irrigation District Board of Directors, Board member Steven A. Webb decided to step down and did not seek re‐ election this past November. He termed out in December, noting that after so much time of giving to OID, he finally decided to devote time to his family's needs and to being a grandparent.

No Change In Area Gas Prices

Average retail gasoline prices in Modesto have not moved in the past week, averaging $2.99/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 201 gas outlets in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.57/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

RAINBOW’S END

A brief rainstorm, followed by sunny skies, produced a double rainbow over Oakdale around 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25 with residents treated to the colorful show. Weather service forecasters indicated rainfall should end by 7 p.m. Thursday with just a few hundredths of an inch falling in scattered showers throughout the region.

FUTURE LEADERS

The Oakdale Lions Club recently sponsored the Oakdale Leo service club. LEO stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity. The Leo Club was chartered a few months ago and was celebrated at a recent Lions Club meeting. Leo members range in age from 12 to 17 and work independently of the Lions Club doing their own community service projects. The Lions Club provides advisors to the Leo Club but lets the kids make their own decisions regarding community service and fundraising. The Lions Club is very excited to welcome this new youthful service group to the Oakdale community.
