Council Bans Dumpster Diving

With the transient population growing in the city and the associated problems becoming more noticeable, the Oakdale City Council on Monday, July 6 proposed a city ordinance prohibiting the searching of waste containers, otherwise known as "dumpster diving."

Jones Recognized As Veteran Of The Year

Assembly Republican Leader Kristin Olsen, of Modesto, honored Army National Guard Capt. Cynthia Jones as the 2015 Veteran of the Year for the 12th Assembly District. Capt. Jones is currently serving as the Company Commander for the Chinook Unit in Stockton, Bravo Company, 1-126th Aviation Regiment – and is the first woman to serve in this capacity.

Air Officials Urge July 4 Fireworks Restraint

As Independence Day approaches, local air officials remind Valley residents that July 4 fireworks increase levels of dangerous particulate matter (PM) and pose a health threat to themselves and their neighbors. Historically, the Valley experiences dangerous particulate levels four or five times higher than the health based federal standards. These spikes are largely attributable to personal fireworks use throughout Valley neighborhoods.

Record Crowd Flocks To Annual Carnival

It was a made to order day, as the Kjeldgaard family opened their property to the community for the Eighth Annual Riverbend Ranch Charity Carnival on Saturday, June 27. The upper parking lot of the River Road location remained full and a steady stream of cars came in and out between the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. event hours.

State Backtracks On H20 Curtailment

The Oakdale Irrigation District reported on Wednesday, June 24 that state attorneys backed away from curtailment notices directed at more than 200 senior water rights holders in California, now saying they were "courtesy notices" and "advisory" only.

Gas Prices Still Top $3 Per Gallon

Average retail gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 4.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.20/gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 201 gas outlets in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.80/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Businessman Fights Carjacker To Avoid Abduction

A local check cashing business owner thwarted his own kidnapping during a carjacking Friday morning, June 18 that left him with only a scraped knee and a bump on his head. His car, a black BMW 525i was taken during the incident but later recovered.
