Holiday Travelers Will Enjoy Lower Gas Prices This Week

Americans hitting the road for Thanksgiving will certainly have something to be extra thankful for: the cheapest gasoline prices since March 2009. The low prices are showing up just in time for millions of motorists that are heading out, saving them $1.5 billion over the five days that GasBuddy's recent survey found most motorists will be travelling.

Operation Christmas Child Continues

The River Christian Community Church is serving as a collection site for Operation Christmas Child-the world's largest Christmas project of its kind. The annual Samaritan's Purse project is a favorite of many Oakdale residents, families, churches and groups who spread joy to millions of children around the world by filling shoeboxes with fun toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement.

Winter Weather Closure Along State Route 108

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has closed Sonora Pass/State Route 108 for the winter as of Monday, Nov. 16. The road is closed at Kennedy Meadows.

State Fire Officials Remain On Alert

While recent rains and cooler temperatures have lowered the threat of wildfires in some areas of the State, CAL FIRE continues to have extra firefighter staffing statewide and remains at peak fire season in Central and Southern California. Last week alone CAL FIRE crews responded to nearly 50 new wildfires. Even as CAL FIRE transitions out of peak fire season in Northern California and into its winter preparedness mode, fire officials are still asking residents statewide to be cautious outdoors as 'One Less Spark means One Less Wildfire.'

Veterans Honored For Service

Veterans Appreciation Day ceremonies were held at the Veterans Monument in William A. Fish Veterans Park on Wednesday, Nov 11 by the local VFW Post 2922. The day of remembrance and appreciation of veterans included speakers, quilt presentations, an official Flag Retirement ceremony by the Boy Scouts and an 'open mic' session.

FESTIVAL FUN

Saturday's sunny skies and mild temperatures were the perfect fit to offer up the annual Salmon Festival, put on at the Army Corps of Engineers Park in Knights Ferry. Youngsters take part in one of the many craft activities, making colorful prints of salmon. Lions Club member Ralph Barajas serves up some barbecued salmon for hungry diners while the salmon mascot gathers some kids in for a hug. Many people also took the opportunity to search for the salmon making their way up the Stanislaus River, returning for the spawn.

Once again community interests of Oakdale's homeless and its associated problems were brought up to the city council resulting in the majority of the Monday, Nov. 16 meeting spent discussing the issues and the city's response. Included in the talk were some surprising figures on the amount of time officers spend with a select group of individuals.

Distinguished Young Women Applicants Sought

Soroptimist International of Oakdale is seeking Junior Class girls to participate in the Distinguished Young Women of Oakdale for the Class of 2017 scholarship program. Over $6,000 in college scholarships and the Distinguished Young Woman of Oakdale title will be awarded at the program to be held Feb. 13, 2016 at Magnolia School Auditorium. Participants need not attend Oakdale High School, but must live within the 95361 zip code.

“Autumn Broadway Blast” Debuts On Stage Sunday

YES (Youth Entertainment Stage) Company will stage its first-ever production of "Autumn Broadway Blast," a Broadway music review in a coffeehouse type setting with desserts and warm drinks served. A special project of the Stanislaus County Office of Education and the Education Foundation of Stanislaus County, a limited number of tickets ($7-$10) are available at www.showtix4u.com. The event is scheduled for this Sunday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Mildred Perkins Multipurpose Room, 3920 Bluebird Drive, Modesto.
