Modesto Woman Killed In Friday Highway Crash

Just as the traffic was ramping up with an influx of visitors for the weekend Oakdale Rodeo, a late afternoon accident at the city's east end resulted in one fatality. The Friday, April 7 accident occurred about 4:45 p.m. and claimed the life of Christene Busser, 47, of Modesto, according to police.

Writers Gather In Sonora

The first in a series of writing workshops will be hosted by the Sonora Writers Group on Saturday, April 15 at the Tuolumne County Library in Sonora. The workshop is from 10 a.m. to noon; the public is invited, there is no cost and refreshments will be served. The "Successful Self Marketing" program will be led by local author Sandy Lee. She will share her experiences marketing her latest books, "No Unturned Stone" and "Hermie the Bug."

City Taps Interim Director For Public Services Position

Members of the Oakdale City Council appointed Jeff Gravel to serve as Public Services Director at the regular April 3 council meeting. Mr. Gravel has served as interim Public Services Director since September, taking over for retired director Thom Clark. His annual salary will be just over $122,176.

Oakdale Police Ready For Busy Rodeo Week

As Oakdale's beloved rodeo week activities hit full stride, local law enforcement professionals are stepping up their coverage in an effort to insure those in attendance have a great time and go home in one piece. According to Oakdale Police Chief Scott Heller, while the event is expected to increase the city's population by 50 percent, police and safety crews will match that increase.

State Gas Prices Higher Than National Average

Average retail gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 0.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.78/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 201 gas outlets in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.32/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
