Distracted Driving Program Aimed At Adult Motorists

Every year, thousands of people are seriously injured or killed statewide in vehicle collisions caused by distracted drivers. The unfortunate truth is distracted driving collisions are 100 percent preventable, because distracted driving is a choice. Though there are numerous distractions a driver must manage, cell phone use is the most prevalent. With multiple modes of communication and instant entertainment at their fingertips, drivers are constantly engaging in cell phone use while driving.

Denham Introduces Bill Regarding Guard Bonuses

U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) on Tuesday introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives – H.R. 6316, the Veterans Earned Their Bonuses Act (VET Bonus Act) – to address the issue of veterans being forced to repay bonuses that were granted by California National Guard (CalGuard) recruiters from 2004 to 2010.

Coopers Leads Patriotic Stand

The timing was just right for the very first Veterans Standing For American Patriotism movement led by organizer Duke Cooper of Veterans First in Riverbank. Dream It, Be It Conference Enjoyed By Girls

Local service organization Soroptimist International of Oakdale recently hosted 18 seventh, eighth and ninth grade girls at its "Dream It, Be It" conference held in the library at Oakdale High School. Annalise VanderVeen, Oakdale's Distinguished Young Woman, served as keynote speaker and encouraged the girls to always talk to their family, friends, and teachers about things that are bothering them rather than stress about their worries or problems. She also encouraged the girls to consider participating in the Distinguished Young Women of Oakdale program in their junior year for the fun experience and chance to earn college scholarships. Riverbank Parks Department Mourns Loss Of Supervisor

Riverbank City staff, especially members of the Parks and Recreation Department, are mourning the loss of their friend and fellow employee, Facilities Maintenance Supervisor Tim Dowdy. Though he worked in Riverbank, he lived in the Oakdale area. Dowdy was killed in an apparent hit-and-run accident near Waterford early Thursday morning, Nov. 10.

Sheriff’s Department Seeks Suspect Info, Lists Service

As the investigation into Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputy Dennis Wallace's death continues, Stanislaus County Sheriff's Detectives are asking for the public's help. Detectives are working on establishing a timeline of everywhere the suspect, David Machado, may have been before and after the Nov. 13 shooting at the Fox Grove Fishing Access near Hughson.

BUS STUFFERS

OHS Associated Student Body representatives assembled outside of the bus they intend to fill for the canned food drive "Stuff the Bus" challenge posed by Oakdale Junior High., OJHS students gathered a load of donations to be taken to their onsite bus. The canned food drive will be hosted at each campus from Monday, Nov. 14 to Friday, Nov. 18. All collections will be taken to Oakdale Community Sharing for distribution to those in need during the holiday season.

Pipeline Protest Due

A solidarity action and rally at the Army Corps of Engineers office in Knights Ferry was scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 near press time for The Leader, the gathering in protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The movement, organizers said, was part of a larger statewide initiative on Tuesday in an effort to stop the pipeline. Attendees were planning to call on President Obama to instruct the Army Corps of Engineers to revoke the permits for the pipeline.

Grant Focuses On Safety For Pedestrians, Bicyclists

A grant-funded effort by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the California Office of Traffic Safety will focus on reducing fatal collisions involving pedestrians and bicyclists. The California Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Enforcement and Education Project IV is in effect through Sept. 30, 2017.

PREPARING TO SERVE

Organizers expect to serve over 1100 meals on Thanksgiving as the Spirit of Oakdale hosts its 23rd Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Donations of turkeys (cooked or frozen), desserts, toys and cash are still welcomed as the crew prepares for the meal. The free community meal is served on Thanksgiving Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gene Bianchi Community Center. Denham Appears Poised To Return To Congress

With a week passing since the Nov. 8 Presidential Election, results from the Stanislaus County Registrar of Voters showed incumbent Congressman Jeff Denham appearing poised for reelection in the 10th Congressional District, receiving 53 percent of the vote in Stanislaus County and 51 percent in San Joaquin County. Challenger Michael Eggman received 49 percent of the vote in San Joaquin and 47 percent in Stanislaus counties.

Recall Petition Submitted For OID Director Santos
