Red Ribbon Observance Urged By Highway Patrol

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) recognizes Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31, as an excellent opportunity for families to have lifesaving conversations with their children about drug use. The Red Ribbon Campaign, organized by the National Family Partnership, is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation.

Oakdale Substitute Teacher Sentenced To 180-Day Term

An Oakdale substitute teacher, arrested in 2013, was sentenced on Monday, Oct. 17, to 180 days in jail by a Stanislaus County Superior Court judge.

Halftime Honors 1996 Champs And Troops

A larger than usual crowd flocked to The Corral this past Friday night. Not only did the fans witness a varsity Mustangs 39-14 home win over visiting Weston Ranch, but they were also treated to Military Appreciation Night, also known as the Honor Bowl. And, topping it off, there was a special 20-year reunion for the 1996 CIF Section Championship Mustangs football team.

HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

The City of Oakdale has once again partnered with Kiwanis Club of Oakdale for the Annual Halloween Parade and Festival. The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., beginning with the annual parade. The parade begins at the Youth Building, 297 Gilbert Ave., next to OHS. Line up is at 4:30 p.m., the parade heads from there east along G Street to the Gene Bianchi Community Center at South Second Avenue. The festival will include crafts, face painting, costume contest and a complimentary hot dog, chips and drink dinner.

Soccer League Grapples With Charity Status Loss

After the scandal of one of its volunteers getting arrested on suspicion of embezzlement earlier this year, the Oakdale Youth Soccer League faces another financial blow as it is now operating with a revoked non-profit status while still soliciting funds and donations. League officials are currently working on getting the status reinstated on what they say were oversights and problems with correct records from the internal theft.

Candy Alternatives Sought For Teal Pumpkin Project

With Halloween coming up next week, a local effort is hoping to get some area residents to participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project. The goal is to offer non-candy items, helping make Halloween safe for young trick-or-treaters with food allergies.

Oakdale Senior Center Crafting Group will once again host its annual quilt raffle to benefit the Gladys L. Lemmons Senior Community Center. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The quilt is 96'x96' and the winner will be announced during the Senior Center Valentine Dinner on Feb. 10, 2017. Tickets may be purchased at the Senior Center at 450 E. A St., Oakdale.

Knights Ferry Hosts Annual Salmon Duathlon

On Your Mark Events presents its 20th Annual Salmon Duathlon and 5k Run on Saturday, Nov. 5, 8:45 a.m., in the historic hamlet and surrounding area of Knights Ferry. The Salmon Duathlon (run, bike, run) and 5k Run (two separate competitions) will benefit the preservation of the salmon natural spawning habitat in the Stanislaus River.

Young Entrepreneurs Encouraged To Apply For NFIB Scholarships

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Young Entrepreneur Foundation announced that its scholarship application for the 2017 NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards is now open through Dec. 18, 2016. High school seniors who run their own business and plan to attend a two- or four-year university, college, or vocational institute during the fall of 2017 are eligible to apply.
