Pink Martini Brings Musical Spectacle To Gallo Center

With the recent release of their ninth studio album "Je dis oui," Pink Martini will be performing at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto for the first time on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m., showcasing newly recorded tracks along with selections from the band's holiday album.

On Friday, Nov. 11 Hula's in Escalon did over $550 in free meals for military service personnel. "It was a good turnout, people came from all over," said Hula's owner Tony Victorino. "Over 4000 people saw it on Facebook." This was the second year the restaurant offered free meals for veterans, with many from the Escalon and Oakdale areas turning out. Last year they provided did about $300 in meals, with this year's turnout better. San Joaquin Delta College Hosts Officer Graduation

Twenty-nine future law enforcement officers took to the stage as the graduating class 38-16 of the San Joaquin Delta College Peace Officer Academy earlier this week. Cadets of all backgrounds started this journey March 20, 2016 and are prepared to be the new era of law enforcement. While some of the cadets are in varying stages in their hiring process with different agencies, currently six of the cadets have been hired with local agencies. DEMONSTRATION DAY

A coordinated group of peaceful protestors gathered recently at the historic Knights Ferry covered bridge, staging a protest against the proposed Dakota Access pipeline. The 'No DAPL' movement was done on a nationwide basis on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 15, with the group at Knights Ferry including several church members from Merced, Mariposa, Fresno and Modesto in addition to the Save the Stanislaus River organization.

Local Equestrian Serpa Set To Appear In Rose Parade

A love of horses, a strong commitment to community service and two years of hard work have earned local resident Dennis Serpa a berth in the 2017 Rose Parade. Serpa is a member of Backcountry Horsemen of California, Mid-Valley Unit, a local 400-member strong volunteer organization which directly assists the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and County of Stanislaus in operating backcountry camps and maintaining urban, national forest and wilderness trail systems.

Participants Sought For DYW

Soroptimist International of Oakdale is seeking Junior Class girls to participate in the Distinguished Young Women of Oakdale for the Class of 2018 scholarship program. Over $6,000 in college scholarships and the Distinguished Young Woman of Oakdale title will be awarded at the program to be held March 11, 2017 at Magnolia School Auditorium. Participants need not attend Oakdale High School, but must live within the 95361 zip code.

CRUZIN’ CRITTERS

Proving to be good sports, top photo, three student volunteers marvel at the Madagascar Screeching Cockroaches placed on their shirts during Magnolia Elementary School's recent Reptile Show. Cruzin' Critters travels to varying venues including schools, educating and sharing a variety of rescued critters. An alligator was one of many exotic reptiles the students were able to encounter up close and personal during the Reptile Show hosted by the school's Parent Teacher Club. The show was a reward for a couple dozen Jog-a-Thon participants, but opened to the student body and their families for a nominal fee.

Women’s Club Donates

Local Sara Sperry, from Farm to Kids, spoke at the November Oakdale Women's Club meeting about donating a pound of almonds to kids in need for every pound sold. The club donated $100 to Farm to Kids to support their efforts.

COWBOY SANTA

The 23rd Annual Cowboy Christmas event will once again return to the Gene Bianchi Community Center to kick off the holiday season. The event will be hosted beginning Friday, Nov. 25 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with vendors both inside and the center and outside in the plaza. Cowboy Santa will make his customary visit, riding into the plaza Saturday at 11 a.m. Proceeds from the annual event benefit the Oakdale Cowboy Museum.
