December Sees Dip At Pump

Average retail gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 0.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.00/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 201 gas outlets in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.46/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Disaster Legislation Aims To Support Communities

The Supporting Mitigation Activities and Resiliency Targets for Rebuilding Act, also known as the SMART Rebuilding Act, is aimed at lowering the cost of natural disasters by helping states and communities plan ahead and rebuild smarter. The legislation was introduced recently by 10th Congressional District representative Jeff Denham of Turlock.

Compassionate Friends Plans Annual Candle Lighting

The death of a child is devastating and it's important to the family that the child always be remembered. That's why members of The Compassionate Friends (TCF) of the Modesto-Riverbank Area will participate in an annual worldwide event designed to honor the memories of all children, regardless of age, who have died. The Chapter is joining in Sunday, Dec. 10 with hundreds of organized memorial services around the world for The Compassionate Friends 21st annual Worldwide Candle Lighting, an event now believed to be the largest mass candle lighting in the world.

Film Competition Offered

College and high school student filmmakers can save $10 on submission fees by submitting their short films in a local competition by the Friday, Dec. 15, earlybird deadline. The Student Film Festival will be held March 17, 2018, at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts in Tracy. For submission rules go to grandfoundation.org/events/film. The final deadline for film submissions is Jan. 5, 2018. The Grand Foundation will present $6,750 in awards for the best student films.
