Free Telescope Nights At Modesto Junior College

The Modesto Junior College Astronomy Club invites the community to view the stars at the Telescope Nights held the first Friday of each month at the new Science Community Center on MJC's West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave, Modesto. Telescope Night admission, viewing and campus parking are free.

With the New Year beginning, the California Highway Patrol is reminding motorists of several new laws or changes to existing law that go into effect in 2014. The following are summaries of some transportation-related laws that, unless otherwise stated, go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

CHP Reminds Revelers To Safely Ring In The New Year

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is urging motorists to begin the New Year responsibly. If the celebration plans include alcohol, designate a driver before the festivities begin. The CHP will be ringing in the New Year on the roadway with motorists as part of a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP), which begins at 6p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, and continues through 11:59p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.

CHP Secures Seat Belt Grant To Help Save Lives

Saving lives by securing vehicle occupants throughout the state is the objective behind the California Highway Patrol's (CHP) "Vehicle Occupant Restraint Education and Instruction III (VOREIIII)" grant. In 2013, California achieved one of the higher seat belt usage rates in the nation at 97.4 percent. Through education and enforcement, the CHP is hoping to increase the seat belt usage rate while simultaneously reducing the number of people killed and injured in collisions.
