Community Coming Together For Local Make-A-Wish Effort

Members of the Oakdale community and surrounding areas are coming together for a charitable cause. Dr. Christina Chan and Oakdale Mixed Martial Arts Academy, along with other businesses, are joining up to lend a hand in helping a local youngster's wish come true. Organizers said a 4-year-old girl, with optical cancer, has been selected for a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Her name and that of her wish are not yet being disclosed but will be at a later date.

Car Seat Check-Up Set For County Residents

Stanislaus County Health Services Agency (HSA) and its Keep Baby Safe (KBS) Program will conduct a free child safety seat check event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23. The safety checks will be held in the Learning Institute parking lot, 917 Oakdale Road, Modesto. Trained car seat technicians will be on site to assist the public in making sure children are riding in an appropriate car seat for their age, weight and height.

County Plans Homeless Census

Stanislaus County Housing and Support Services Collaborative (SCHSSC) will be conducting a point in time count of homeless persons throughout Stanislaus County on Thursday, Jan. 28. That will include an accounting of the homeless in Oakdale.

Chamber Awards Night Noted As Stellar Event

The Bianchi Community Center was the setting Friday night, Jan. 15 for the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce 70th Annual Awards Dinner. According to Chamber CEO Mary Guardiola, over 260 people attended the event that saw the Gilbert Family awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award and Citizen of the Year recognition going to community humanitarian Jo Harris.

Cowboy Museum Withdraws From Iconic Testicle Festival

The Oakdale Cowboy Museum has ended its 15-year event partnership with the Oakdale Rotary Club and the Oakdale Testicle Festival, according to Cowboy Museum Manager Karen Serpa.

Bronco Wine Company Earns Zero Waste Gold Certification

Bronco Wine Company, one of the largest wineries and the largest vineyard owner in the United States, unveiled today, Jan. 13, that it has received the prestigious Zero Waste Gold Facility certification from the U.S. Zero Waste Business Council (USZWBC). During its national sales meeting, the certification was presented to Bronco Wine Company's Ceres, Calif. facility today.

Memorial Run CHP Tradition

More than 70 cadets are preparing to graduate from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Academy this week. Before they do, they will run from the Academy in West Sacramento to the California Peace Officers' Memorial monument across from the State Capitol. The approximate 5-mile run is a tradition on the Wednesday before each graduation.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Event Features Prize Winning Author

Taylor Branch, Pulitzer Prize winning author and proponent of nonviolence and civil rights, will present the keynote address for the 22nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration on Saturday, Jan. 23 in the Modesto Junior College Performing Arts and Media Center Auditorium, 435 College Ave. in Modesto.
