Victory Caps Homecoming

Governor Signs Motorized Skateboard Bill

Legislation by Assembly Republican Leader Kristin Olsen, of Modesto, to allow the use of electrically-motorized personal transportation devices in California has been signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown. The bill provides for key safety measures, while allowing local governments the flexibility to regulate their use for individual communities.

Fall Season Brings Lower Gas Prices

Average retail gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 0.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.62/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 201 gas outlets in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.31/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Campaign Focuses On DUI Reduction

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is implementing a regional effort to save lives and eliminate impaired drivers. To accomplish their mission and reduce traffic collisions involving impaired drivers, the CHP's Modesto Area office is using a federal grant to conduct a regional campaign against impaired drivers in Stanislaus County. The 12-month project started Oct. 1 and ends on Sept. 30, 2016.

"A soldier never dies – until he is forgotten" – that comment was made several times on a recent Saturday morning at the Oakdale Citizens Cemetery, as local members of the Stanislaus Civil War Association joined with the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Camp 2023 to remember "Judge" William A. Griffin and two of his fellow veterans, Daniel "Whit" Carmichael and Thomas Jefferson Ralls.

Only 386 Legally Packing Concealed Weapons In City

The Cowboy Capital of the World may be a reference to the Old West history of Oakdale, but so far as the shoot-'em up Wild West, not so much, as measured by permits to carry concealed weapons (CCW) in the city of 20,000. Those with a permit can take loaded guns to the store, their workplace, and other public places as long as the firearm is not visible and is not prohibited by private property rules.
