Coordinated Holiday Enforcement Effort Due

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is joining several other state highway patrol agencies across the nation to participate in two separate traffic safety challenges during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Keeping in line with the CHP's mission of saving lives, both campaigns have set a goal of zero fatalities during the five-day period.

Council Says ‘No’ To Fire Study Payment

A consent agenda item by the city manager requesting the city pay over $8,300 for a joint fire study sparked discussion at the Monday, Nov. 18 Oakdale City Council meeting. The item had some council members questioning the intent of asking the city to pay for something they were told was being taken care of by the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire District.

Holiday Cards For Heroes

Oakdale High School Leadership students started a new event at OHS for the holidays. Students and staff who are interested are making cards, which will be mailed to men and woman in the U.S. Armed Services as part of the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program.

OID Discussion - Groundwater Draws Crowd

The topic of groundwater brought a standing-room-only crowd to the Oakdale Irrigation District Board of Directors Nov. 19 regular meeting. OID Water Operations Manager Eric Thorburn presented on groundwater specific to the OID service area where he covered a basic overview of groundwater, its management in OID, and OID's future plans.

4-H Makes Holiday Plans

Orange Blossom 4-H Club is gearing up for a year of learning, leadership, new friends, and community service. At their November meeting, members brought their homemade Thanksgiving centerpieces. Some made traditional candle and flower arrangements, while others made fun fall themed ones. A favorite was a basket ready for the hot rolls that looked like a turkey.

EPA Move Applauded By Assemblymember Olsen

On Friday, Nov. 15, according to the Wall Street Journal, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed easing the annual Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) requirement for ethanol in gasoline, acknowledging that mandated levels specified in a 2007 law are difficult, if not impossible, to meet.

A Modesto man, out on bail for drug charges, who police say led them on a high speed chase in a stolen car, was shot by a homeowner in the early a.m. hours of Nov. 13 after attempting to break in to the residence even despite being warned to halt.

$8.5 Million - Settlement In Officer’s Death

On the one-year anniversary of the death of off-duty Oakdale Police Officer Paul Katuszonek, the attorney representing the family of the officer announced that Gold Star Foods Inc., a food distribution and long haul trucking company based in Ontario, CA, agreed to pay $8.5 million to Katuszonek's family to settle claims that its truck driver employee caused his death.
