Year In Review: Looking Back At 2012

From the lows of financial woes for the City of Oakdale and the economy in general, to the highs of a run to the state bowl game by the varsity football Mustangs late in the year, 2012 was filled with news, both good and bad. This week, we start our annual 'Year in Review' by taking a look at the months gone by, with headlines from the first half of the year. These were taken from the pages of The Oakdale leader, January through June.

Police Department’s Shimmel Gets Stripes

The Oakdale Police Department continues to fill its upper ranks with the December promotion of Detective Brian Shimmel to the rank of sergeant within the department.

Local Ties - Council Names New City Manager

Oakdale City Council members announced Thursday, Dec. 20 that they will name Bryan Whitemyer as the city's new city manager. The decision comes after months of a search and a series of special city council meetings to close the deal.

County Transit, ROTA Merger Looms

The first of the year brings a change for the Riverbank-Oakdale Transit Authority, which will be taken over by Stanislaus Regional Transit (StaRT), the two sides agreeing to a merger earlier this year. ROTA has served the two cities with the public bus program since 1993.

Phone Lines At Hospital Vandalized

Oak Valley Hospital reported vandalism of two AT&T junction boxes that disrupted telephone service to the main hospital, Oak Valley Care Center, Oak Valley Community Health Center and surrounding physician offices. AT&T is currently working to restore phone, fax and internet services.

No Home For The Holidays

They can be seen using tables and benches as shelter to keep dry, their possessions wrapped, bagged, boxed, or stored in any way that can be moved at a moment's notice. Their dim, unreadable eyes below dirty hair gaze out sometimes in fear or with confusion as they try to make sense of what's happened to them in their drive to survive another winter-filled day and cold biting night.

The Oakdale Varsity Football team arrived bright and early Friday, Dec. 14 to board the bus headed for Carson, California for the California Interscholastic Federation State Football Championship Division II Bowl game -- a first for the Mustangs and there was a good-sized, rowdy crowd ready to send them off in style.

City Yard Getting Closed Circuit TV

With several thefts of equipment and city property occurring at the public works corporation yard over the past year, the City of Oakdale has invested in a series of closed circuit cameras mounted in strategic locations throughout the Fifth Avenue facility.
