Solar Panel Install Leaves Neighbor In Dark

For 60 years, Carl Porter has enjoyed sitting and gazing into the wooded area surrounding the property of his Stearns Road home. What he described as a serene park setting with the occasional grazing deer, has now been disrupted with banks of 13-foot high solar panels installed just a few feet away from the property line he shares with the Oakdale Golf and Country Club.

StanCOG Seeking Transportation Tax

After failing votes in elections of 2006 and 2008, the Stanislaus Council of Governments is again aiming for a local tax for transportation issues in Stanislaus County. The difference this time than in previous years, according to Kendall Flint, Regional Government Services Director of Communications & Strategic Planning, is that there is now a majority of support for the tax among county voters and two-thirds of the money would be for local projects controlled by the cities.

Oakdale Academic Decathletes Prepare For State Competition

Oakdale High School's Academic Decathlon Team has one more date with the theme of "India." On Thursday, March 17 they will once again make the trek to Sacramento to represent Stanislaus County in the State Competition.

Civil War Days Back On

After a weekend meeting, on Sunday, March 6, the American Civil War Association announced that an agreement had been reached with the US Army Corps of Engineers and the previously cancelled war reenactments for Knights Ferry Civil War Days set for March 19 and 20 has been reinstated.

Veterans’ Construction Reform Bill Advances

At a full committee mark-up hearing on Thursday, Feb. 25, the U.S. House Veterans' Affairs Committee voted to advance legislation authored by Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) to reform the Veterans Administration (VA) construction process in order to reduce construction project backlog, and ensure that more veterans are able to access the health care benefits they earned. H.R. 4129 would jumpstart construction by allowing the VA to enter into public-private partnership agreements with non-federal entities to build major medical facility projects. The bill now awaits consideration by the full House.

Second River Clean Up Gathering Set Saturday

The first community cleanup of the Stanislaus River in Oakdale in early February was classified as a huge success. About 30 volunteers filled two 20-yard dumpsters with trash and debris collected from the river both under the bridge and just below the bridge. Many volunteer hours and donations from businesses within the Oakdale Shopping Center helped to make the north entrance to the city and the Stanislaus River a cleaner environment to enjoy.
