Generally when I cover a story I'm rarely a participant in the subject matter but this time was a bit different. Though I am not from Oakdale or live in the city (and there have been a few disgruntled readers who have reminded me of this), I do feel part of this "community" and felt the need to volunteer for the Oakdale Children's Play Park Revitalization Project at Dorada Park when City Manager Bryan Whitemyer made the call for workers at a recent city council meeting.

More than one million children ride school buses in California every day. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) joins the observation of National School Bus Safety Week, Oct. 19-23, to help recognize that school buses are the safest way for children to get to and from school.

On Sunday, Oct. 11, Governor Jerry Brown rejected SB539 by Sen. Steve Glazer of Orinda, which would have banned naming schools, parks, buildings and other public property after Confederate leaders, saying it's an issue "quintessentially for local decision makers."

On Saturday, Oct. 3 the Oakdale Shelter Pet Alliance (OSPA) Strut Your Mutt Team leashed up, loaded dogs and headed west to strut for the homeless pets of Oakdale and Riverbank. OSPA took top honors for the second year in a row as the top fundraising team with a grand total of $20,719 along with earning a $1,000 bonus award from Best Friends Animal Society. The OSPA team and their dogs, many adopted from the Oakdale Animal Shelter, joined 400 others at McLaren Park in San Francisco for the third annual Strut Your Mutt event hosted by Best ...

In a week that saw the Seniors beat the Juniors in Powder Puff action, new Homecoming Royalty crowned and an 'off-the-beaten-path' route for the Friday afternoon parade of floats, Oakdale capped its fall celebration with a big varsity football win over Lathrop on Friday night.
