Annual Technology Conference Slated

Documentary Wins International Award

The documentary Halfway Home, directed by Stanislaus State professor Steve Arounsack, has been given a documentary fund award by the Center for Asian American Media. Arounsack is an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Director of the Keck Visual Anthropology Lab. In 2012 he won the Sony Electronics Faculty Award for Innovative Instruction with Technology.

YES KIDS Presenting Disney’s “Peter Pan JR”

Stanislaus County Office of Education's YES (Youth Entertainment Stage) KIDS will present Disney's "Peter Pan JR" at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto next month. Performance dates are Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 at 3 p.m.

Balloons Often Become Valentine’s Day Hazard

More metallic balloons are sold for Valentine's Day than any other holiday and, not surprisingly, it's also around this time of year that customers suffer from outages caused by unsecured metallic balloons drifting into power lines. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) reminds its customers as they celebrate their sweethearts to make sure balloons are always tied to a weight – as required by California law – and to never release them outdoors.

In an effort to raise money for charity, Caltrans employees recently donated their time and money to hold a car show. Several Division of Equipment employees, who work every day on fleet automobiles and equipment, channeled their passion refurbishing old cars into restored classics.

Business Outlook Study Presented Through UOP

The California economy continues to perform well and should maintain strong growth despite an uncertain policy environment and financial market volatility according to the latest projection from the Center for Business and Policy Research at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. The recent tax cut and spending deal in Washington provide federal fiscal stimulus that will provide a modest boost to growth in 2018 and 2019, but create long-term challenges and add considerable risk and uncertainty to the forecast for 2020 and beyond.

Two Denham Bills Signed Into Law

Action on Friday, Feb. 9 saw the House of Representatives pass H.R. 1892, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, which sets discretionary spending levels and funds the government though March 23. Included in the bill were key provisions originally introduced by U.S. Representative Jeff Denham to help increase access to healthcare in the Valley and encourage mitigation for wildfires and other natural disasters.

Care Packages Sent To Military Overseas

American Veterans First (AVF) recently shipped out another 81 packages that will go to men and women serving our country overseas. AVF Founder Duke Cooper of Oakdale expressed how important it is to send care packages to military men and women, with the packages serving to brighten their day, as receiving something from home typically lifts their spirits. The ability for the AVF organization to ship the care packages came through the generosity from community members throughout the 209, Cooper noted. The group of volunteers raised funds throughout the holidays.
