The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has become aware of a population of invasive nutria (Myocastor coypus) reproducing within the San Joaquin Valley. Given the severity of potential impacts and the impacts realized in other infested states, CDFW believes early intervention actions could be successful in eradicating nutria from the area and is asking the public's help in looking for and reporting nutria sightings in order to determine the extent of the infestation.

It was billed as the 'battle of the badges' and plenty of first responders and emergency personnel took part but it was also the general public heeding the call for blood donations that helped the American Red Cross far surpass its goal of two dozen units in a drive on Thursday, Feb. 8 at the Gene Bianchi Community Center. Here, Oakdale Police Lt. Joe Carrillo does what is called a 'Power Red' donation, providing two units of blood in one visit. The documentary Halfway Home, directed by Stanislaus State professor Steve Arounsack, has been given a documentary fund award by the Center for Asian American Media. Arounsack is an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Director of the Keck Visual Anthropology Lab. In 2012 he won the Sony Electronics Faculty Award for Innovative Instruction with Technology.

More metallic balloons are sold for Valentine's Day than any other holiday and, not surprisingly, it's also around this time of year that customers suffer from outages caused by unsecured metallic balloons drifting into power lines. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) reminds its customers as they celebrate their sweethearts to make sure balloons are always tied to a weight – as required by California law – and to never release them outdoors.
