Last week I mentioned that I was going to be fishing for bass with a childhood friend. It's been at least six months since I've been on a bass boat. We ended up fishing the Delta. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) held a statewide Litter Removal Day and Enforcement Day on Thursday, April 21 to pick up litter, trash and debris along the state highway system and to educate the public about this costly issue.

Volunteers will meet near the river in the Cost Less parking lot. Bring gloves, boots, and energy. So far volunteers have collected over eight tons of debris in the last three months, which would have otherwise been grabbed by the river this past week as the water rose to its highest level in years.

For the third year Doctors Medical Center will honor its "graduates" of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Superhero Night at the Modesto Nuts game. NICU grads and their families will be honored on the field and one special NICU grad will throw out the first pitch with the help of the NICU Medical Director, Dr. Timothy Yao. The Nuts will honor an MVP NICU grad who turns seven that day. Children are encouraged to dress like superheroes and there will be a photo booth taking trading card photos of the NICU grads in their superhero attire.

A project that saw many contributors came to fruition on Monday morning at Haidlen Ford on East F Street in Oakdale. Here, recently-turned 16-year-old Hailey Horn has the key and gets ready to drive off the lot with a used car that was refurbished and prepared for her, free of charge, courtesy of a team of volunteers. The teen is battling brain cancer and friends of the family wanted to make sure she had a special 'Sweet 16' birthday. Looking on is General Manager Erich Haidlen.

Longtime former Escalon resident Minnie Laugero, now living at Dale Commons in Modesto, turned 100 on Monday, April 4, 2016. She celebrated her birthday at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Modesto. On hand for the celebration were Minnie's children and spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, longtime friends and former co-workers. Along with family in Escalon, she has cousins in Oakdale and many past co-workers in the Riverbank area, and friends in all three communities.

Hard-hitting Oakdale Mustang outside linebacker and strong safety, Robby Bagley has come to a decision on where he will be playing football this upcoming fall and beyond. On Tuesday, April 19 Bagley signed with the University of La Verne. Bagley will take his talents to Southern California to compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) to play for the Leopards.

With nearly 20 projects around town, volunteers gathered on Saturday, April 23 to share breakfast and then headed out to their assignments of painting, cleaning, yard maintenance and general beautification for the city. In addition to clean up teams, there were also some special 'encouragement' teams that went to the Oak Valley Care Center to visit with elderly residents there, helping brighten the day.
